1 of the Cheapest SUVs of 2024 Is Quickly Climbing the Sales Charts
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax is making waves. Recent sales data reveals Chevy’s cheapest SUV is finally turning the tide and consumers’ heads. Though it’s still riding in the popular Trailblazer and Equinox’s wake, this subcompact crossover is closing the gap. Here’s why sales are looking sunny for the 2024 Chevy Trax.
The 2024 Chevy Trax is on the right sales track
The past few months have been very good for the Chevy Trax. Its sales upswing is likely thanks to the all-new 2024 model, and the data shows that shoppers are enthusiastic about the redesigned Trax.
Chevy’s cheapest SUV was off to a slow start in the first quarter of 2023. In January, it sold 2,127 units. The numbers dropped in February when customers purchased only 2,042 Trax models. And March saw 2,297 units delivered.
But in April, Chevy Trax sales surged to 7,064. Though it saw a slight dip in May when 6,793 models sold, it crept back up to 7,064 in June.
But third-quarter figures show an even steeper spike. The Trax sold 12,138 in July, 13,109 in August, and 12,623 in September.
Those numbers total 65,257 for the first three quarters of 2023. That’s a 198% year-to-date (YTD) increase since last year in the same period.
Given the data, that huge uptick is likely due to the 2024 Trax’s exciting revamp.
So, how is Chevy’s cheapest SUV performing against other models in the Bow Tie brand’s lineup? It’s doing better than you might expect.
The 2024 Trax is holding its own against other Chevy SUVs
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax sales rank around the middle of the pack of Chevrolet SUVs. For example, it has outsold the Bolt, Blazer, and Suburban.
The Bolt, including the EUV crossover, has sold 49,492 vehicles year-to-date. Chevy’s popular EV has seen a sales increase this year of 125%, but it’s nowhere near the gain the Trax has experienced.
The Suburban came close, with 42,678 through September. The Blazer came closer, with 48,859 leaving dealership lots.
The Tahoe, Trailblazer, Traverse, and Equinox all outsold the Trax. Consumers purchased 84,091 Tahoes, 92,479 Trailblazers, and 100,999 Traverse SUVs, GoodCarBadCar reports.
Interestingly, the perenially popular Equinox sold the most, moving 154,142 units through September, despite a YTD drop of -5.62%.
Chevrolet’s cheapest SUV just got better
Chevrolet put the Trax on hiatus last year, skipping the 2023 model. But the auto giant didn’t waste those 12 months. It used the time wisely to make the 2024 Trax better in every way, and consumers have noticed. The new Trax is also larger than the 2022 model but boasts a smaller base MSRP of only $21,495 — cheaper than the previous generation.
The 2024 Trax grew 11 inches longer, and the wheelbase gained six inches. Those dimensions allow significantly more room for riders and cargo.
Five trim levels — LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and ACTIV — bring unique decor, grille designs, and wheels, making them easy to identify without a badge.
Its 1.2-line turbocharged inline-three engine produces 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It isn’t the strongest or the fastest, but Chevrolet says the 2024 Trax can hit 60 mph in 9.0 seconds, a second quicker than the outgoing model. Gas mileage is a solid 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
So, did Chevrolet get its cheapest SUV right this go-round? If the sales numbers are any indication, the Big Three automaker outdid itself with the 2024 Trax.
