Are These 2 Full-Size Pickups Better Than the Redesigned Toyota Tundra?
After what seemed an eternity of trying to make the Tundra relevant, Toyota finally redesigned the full-sized Tundra pickup for 2022. The new truck gets new engines, a much nicer interior, and styling that gives it big-rig good looks. But how does it stack up to the best from Ford and Ram? Not well, apparently.
What does Edmunds think about the 2022 Toyota Tundra?
In its review of the 2022 Toyota Tundra, Edmunds notes it’s the first redesign the truck has seen in 15 years. The redesigned Tundra scores high marks for many of its features, which leads to its overall number-two three in its rankings of full-size pickups. However, the review notes some areas for improvement.
Among the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s many positives are its new turbo V6 and quick shifting 10-speed automatic. That new 389-horsepower engine can launch the Tundra’s from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating full-size pickup. As for comfort, there’s much to be said for the wide front seats, headroom, and space for the driver’s right knee. Then there’s the Tundra’s impressive towing capacity of 11,160 pounds.
But with any vehicle, the Tundra also has some drawbacks. This truck is big, and as such, real-world fuel economy suffers. Ram, Ford, Chevy and even Honda now offer some fun interesting and useful tailgate options. The Toyota makes do with a traditional flip-down tailgate.
The 2022 Ram 1500 beats the Toyota Tunda on Edmunds’ list of full-size trucks
The thorn in the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s side is none other than the Ram 1500. While the Ram last saw a redesign in 2019, it’s the second best full-sized for 2022 according to Edmunds.
The 2022 Ram 1500 packs a powerful 5.7-liter V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The big V8 has instant power. But on the inside the Ram really shines with a comfortable interior that includes supportive seats, a large touchscreen, and a clever gear shift option that opens up the console for more space. Also, the Ram has a sophisticated independent suspension that provides a smooth ride.
However, its 17 mpg overall fuel economy leaves something to be desired. The 2022 Ram 1500 also received mediocre scores for braking and emergency handling.
The Ford F-150 topped Edmunds’ rankings
If the 2022 Toyota Tundra and Ram 1500 come in near the top of Edmunds rankings of full-size pickup trucks, which model sits at the very top? That would be the Ford F-150. Edmunds says the F-150 combines
“power, efficiency, comfort and capability” to make it the best full-sized truck.
The F-150 gets high marks for its options, including several engine options and a wide variety of trims. The F-150 has some amazing towing ratings, as well. For 2022 the big news was the addition of an on-board generatior that boosted the truck’s acceleration and fuel efficiency numbers, and also provides power for tools or a killer tailgate with an outlet in the bed. Ford’s SYNC system is also easy to use.
