Pickup trucks are known for their ability to haul heavy items, but also for their ground clearance. Having the truck lifted off the ground makes off-roading much easier and prevents the underbody from getting damaged by rocks and other debris.

One particular pickup model has over 10 inches of standard clearance (not counting more expensive special edition models and trims or heavy-duty trucks). Let’s look at which one is and see which models have the poorest clearance as well.

How much ground clearance does the 2022 Toyota Tundra have?

Regarding off-roading capability, the Toyota Tundra has enough get-up and go with its 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, giving it enough power to move through various types of terrain.

As for ground clearance, the pickup has 9.3-inches of space between the road surface and the truck’s underbody, according to Edmunds. This makes it one of the highest available on the market for standard pickups, outside of special editions or heavy-duty models that will cost you more.

The Tundra offers 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires mounted on them as standard equipment. Additionally, to help you on your off-trail adventures, you get a full-size spare if you find yourself with a bad tire while enjoying a trip on the road. The price begins at $38,420.

The GMC Hummer EV beats out the Tundra regarding ground clearance

The GMC Hummer EV offers a one-speed direct-drive powertrain running on a 1,000-hp electric motor setup. To complement that, you also get a four-wheel drivetrain to handle some of the most challenging terrains you can throw.

When it comes to ground clearance, you get 10.1-inches of space underneath the full-size pickup truck, according to Edmunds. That’s almost an inch more than what you get with the Tundra. Standard with the Hummer are 18-inch painted alloy wheels with all-terrain tires mounted on them, which handle off-roading quite well.

This electric vehicle stays pretty stable on a 135.6-inch wheelbase and a body width of 86.7-inches minus the side mirrors. For hauling your gear, you get 48 cubic feet of space in the rear of the electric truck. Starting price for the Hummer is $110,295 after destination charges for the first edition rolling out. GMC‘s EV2 model is set at $79,995.

Which full-size trucks have the lowest amount of clearance space?

While the GMC Hummer EV and the Toyota Tundra offer high ground clearance measurements, some trucks have some of the lowest space available underneath them (at least on baseline models).

The first one is the GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck. This model comes with a 2.7-liter Inline four engine that produces 310 hp, which is impressive for a full-size pickup truck. However, if you want to use it for off-roading, you’ll only get 8.1-inches of standard ground clearance, according to Edmunds

However, the lowest clearance offered in this class comes from the standard Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup. With this model, you’ll only get 7.9-inches of space. This could limit your off-roading adventures unless you upgrade to a more expensive model, the Trail Boss, which is specifically made for all-terrain journeys.

When it comes to off-roading with standard pickups, the Hummer EV gives you the most ground clearance, followed by the Tundra. While the Sierra 1500 and the Silverado 1500 offer great performance, you’re not going to get the clearance underneath the truck necessary for serious rock crawling adventures.
