Most trucks still sold as well as ever during Q2 of 2022. However, one full-size truck was outsold by every rival, including midsize and compact trucks, during Q2 2022. Why are so few people buying the 2022 Nissan Titan?
Most buyers don’t want a 2022 Nissan Titan
According to GoodCarBadCar, the 2022 Nissan Titan sold fewer units than nearly every other truck during Q2 2022. Moreover, the Titan only finished ahead of two models in sales, the Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV, both of which were limited during this quarter. However, topping the sales charts is just about every other full-size truck. Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, Ram trucks, and the GMC Sierra are the four best-sellers for this period.
Passed those four is just about every other pickup truck. Far down the list, even behind the new Hyundai Santa Cruz, is the Nissan Titan. Nissan’s full-size truck offering sold just 4,797 units during the second quarter. It couldn’t be further from its strongest competitor, the Ford F-Series trucks, which sold a class-leading 158,644 units during Q2 2022.

Why are Nissan full-size truck sales so far behind?
The closest full-size truck to the 2022 Nissan Titan in sales is the Toyota Tundra. Even as the second-least popular model, it sold roughly 16,000 more units than the Titan. So what’s wrong with the Titan that’s causing most buyers to pass on it? One reason might be the standard (and only) engine. Every version of the Nissan Titan comes with a powerful 5.6-liter V8. While it’s excellent for trucking, the V8 is abysmal for fuel economy, and a lack of other options likely dampers Titan sales.
According to Edmunds, the Nissan full-size truck has a few other weak points. For example, the maximum towing and payload capacities are behind class leaders. It can tow just over 9,000 pounds and haul 1,300-1,700 pounds. In comparison, the Ford F-150 can tow over 11,000 pounds and haul 1,310-2,238 pounds. As a result, truck buyers looking to pull a trailer or carry a lot of weight frequently will likely shy away from buying the Titan.
Lastly, the Nissan Titan doesn’t offer the modern features competitors possess. For example, a configurable tailgate is available for nearly every other full-size truck. The Titan’s outdated version is rendered obsolete when an F-150 or Silverado’s tailgate can turn into a step, desk, or another convenient item.

If you’re shopping for a full-size truck, it’s likely the Ford, Chevy, Ram, GMC, and even Toyota offerings come before the Nissan model. With a lack of modern features, one gas-guzzling engine option, and a slightly lacking towing/payload capacity, it’s no wonder customers are buying their trucks elsewhere.
