If nothing’s more American than a pickup truck, what about a Japanese pickup truck? It turns out the Toyota Tundra is the most American-made truck available. You could say one out of every 200 Texas workers owes their jobs to the Tundra.

Toyota’s been building the Tundra in Texas since 2006

Toyota introduced its first pickup truck to the US market in 1964 (the Stout 1900). Over the years, the Hilux, T100, and Tacoma won Toyota the respect of American pickup truck buyers.

In 1999, Toyota introduced the full-size Tundra. Assembled in Princeton Indiana, the Tundra had the distinction of being the first full-size truck built in North America by a Japanese manufacturer. The new truck won MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year and became an instant sales success.

The automaker struggled to meet the demand for its new truck. So in 2003, Toyota broke ground for a factory in San Antonio, Texas. Since 2006, it has built its Tundra on this 2,000-acre campus.

Toyota and suppliers employ 50,000 Texans

Toyota’s Texas campus is not only the location of a Toyota factory. The property is also home to twenty suppliers that build components of the Tundra. Many other suppliers and researchers involved in the Tundra work nearby. Overall, the Center for Automotive Research estimates 50,000 Texas jobs are directly supported by Toyota’s Tundra production.

Fifty thousand is a lot of jobs. For this reason the Center for Automotive Research estimates that one in every 200 Texas workers are involved in Tundra production.

Because Toyota deals with so many local suppliers, an unrivaled percentage of the Tundra is built in the U.S.A. The American Automobile Labelling Act requires all automakers disclose what percent of a vehicle’s components come from the US or Canada. The Toyota Tundra boasts the highest amount of any full-size truck: 65%.

Toyota takes pride in the Tundra’s Texas heritage

The Toyota company is proud to directly employ 3,200 Texans and to have another 4,000 Texans working for suppliers on its campus. The company sponsors scholarship funds and local disaster relief. In addition, Toyota donated 678 acres of its campus to the city of San Antonio to convert into green space.

The Toyota Tundra also wears its Texas heritage with pride. The ranch on which Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas is now located dates back to 1794. This ranch gave Toyota’s Western-themed Tundra its name: the Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition.
