The 2022 Nissan Frontier is a mid-size pickup that has been growing in popularity with the car-buying public. For the first time in nearly two decades, Nissan has given the Frontier a serious update, and that is helping it to compete with models like the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. But, the Tacoma has long been a tough competitor, so is it worth it to buy the new Frontier over Toyota’s small truck?

Is the Nissan Frontier better than the Toyota Tacoma?

The Toyota Tacoma has long been considered one of the best mid-size trucks, but the 2022 Frontier is giving it a run for its money. While in the past the Frontier has felt like an especially dated pickup, that has now changed. Thanks to Nissan bringing this truck into its third generation.

The 2022 Frontier has received a range of different updates. These include a more refined interior and a revised suspension to help with ride comfort. Plus, Nissan’s mid-size truck now comes with a standard V6 engine, which gives this vehicle legitimate power and capability. 

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is a V6 truck

While the Toyota Tacoma comes standard with a four-cylinder engine, the Nissan Frontier has a standard V6. Because of this, you can enjoy the perceived reliability and power delivered by six cylinders. This engine is 3.8-liters and makes 310 horsepower and 281 pound-foot of torque. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission to ensure smooth delivery of power. 

Because of its powerful engine, the Frontier can tow up to 6,720 lbs when properly equipped. Better yet, it can haul up to 1,610 lbs in payload which means that you can use your truck bed to haul various items. 

The engine of the Nissan Frontier may be one key reason to pick it over the Tacoma. Instead of having to pay extra for more cylinders, Nissan has made a V6 standard fare. And that is something that is likely to be appreciated.

Should you buy a Frontier?

If you are interested in a new mid-size truck, the Nissan Frontier is a viable option. It starts at under $30,000, which is a fairly solid value proposition. And that makes it cheaper than the 2022 Toyota Tacoma pickup. Plus, the Frontier still offers an off-road trim known as the PRO-4X. This trim level comes standard with four-wheel drive and an electronically locking rear differential. It’s also cheaper than its Toyota counterpart. 

Now, the Frontier does still feel a little bit more old-school than other trucks. Its interior is not as nice as some of the competition, and it is riding on nearly an identical frame to old Frontier models. At the same time, Nissan has made important refinements to this truck, which certainly makes it more comfortable than the second-generation Frontier. 

Determining whether or not you should get a Tacoma or a Frontier likely comes down to budget and personal preference. But it is worth noting that according to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Frontier is the better pickup, which should be enough to sway some buyers.
