Trucks are typically the go-to vehicle for most when it comes to driving on snow and ice-covered roads. Despite this, HotCars only included one electric truck on its list of the best EVs for driving on snow. So, what made the cut and which EV trucks were omitted? 

Who made it on HotCar’s list of best EVs for driving on ice and snow?

EV production is in full force these days, with new makes and models coming from every major manufacturer. While EV production is booming, not all consumers are on board with the trend just yet. But car manufacturers are continuing to up their EV game and are building EV trucks and vehicles that can handle all-terrain and off-roading experiences. 

HotCars recently released a list of its pick for the top 10 best EVs to drive on snow. According to HotCars, if you’re in the market for a new EV that can handle the cold weather months, some of your top considerations should be the Porsche Taycan, the Polestar 2 Arctic Circle, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. 

The Porsche Taycan sports a dual motor all-wheel drive setup and 670 hp that HotCars says makes the vehicle a top contender for handling winter terrains. This EV has what it takes to handle the dreary winter months and is a showstopper that is nothing short of electrifying. 

The Polestar 2 Arctic Circle is a special edition model from Volvo. This special edition EV features 30% softer springs and strut braces at the front and rear to increase torsional rigidity and steering responsiveness and better handle snow and ice conditions. 

The Ford Mustang Mach-E mashes the classic Ford Mustang aesthetic with modern EV technology. According to HotCars, this modern Mustang handles the snowy weather a lot better than America’s beloved pony car of yesterday, which means that this all-electric Mustang comes equipped with new technology like traction control and winter tires that make it ideal for handling anything winter weather has to offer. 

The only EV truck that made HotCars’ list 

Surprisingly, the only EV truck that made HotCars list was the Rivian R1T. Founded in 2009, Rivian Automotive is an American vehicle automaker and automotive technology company. The manufacturer markets the R1T as an eclectic truck ready for whatever you decide is a road. 

Rivian stands by its product, ensuring that every consumer can enjoy an unlimited electric adventure behind the wheel of a Rivian. According to Rivian, the R1T can handle any weather conditions and even coins the truck as “the world’s first electric adventure vehicle.” In addition, the R1T sports all-wheel drive, seats 5, has a towing capacity of up to 11,000 lbs and starts at $73,000.

Should these EV trucks have made the list? 

While there are a limited number of EV trucks out on the market, it’s still strange that HotCars only named one truck to its list of top EVs for driving on snow. The list seems to completely ignore electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning and the GMC Hummer. While the cars and SUVs that HotCars named to their list are all fine EVs, if you really want a vehicle that can handle ice, snow, and rough winter conditions, you need a truck. 

According to Ford, the Ford F-150 Lightning is set to transform the future of Ford trucks. This EV truck is just the beginning for Ford, with its 320-mile EPA-estimated range, 2,000 lbs. targeted maximum payload, and 10,000 lbs. targeted available towing capacity. 

Like the Ford Lightning, the GMC Hummer is set to forever transform the future of GMC’s truck lineup. According to GMC, this all-electric super truck has a 350+ mile EPA-estimated range, Super Cruise technology, and 1,000 hp. With all the great EV trucks that are set to be released, it looks like HotCars might just have to update its list of best EVs for driving on snow sooner rather than later.
