The SUV continues to be one of the most popular vehicle purchases in the U.S. SUVs generally aren’t as large as a minivan, but with ample cargo space, SUVs offer plenty of storage and a cooler image. Based on a new study by the website iSeeCars.com, these are the top 10 new SUVs that owners hold on to the longest.

10.  Chevrolet Tahoe

With considerable ground clearance and towing capability, the standard powertrain on the Chevy Tahoe features a 335 hp, 5.3-liter V8 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. An option on Premier trims includes a 10-speed automatic with a 420-hp, 6.2-liter V8 engine. It comes with the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive and has seating for eight passengers. The Tahoe is kept for 9.1 years.

9.  Lincoln Navigator

For those unconcerned with fuel efficiency, the Lincoln Navigator is also held on to for around 9.1 years. The company’s largest and most luxurious model, the Navigator is decked out with leather and can be had with seating for up to eight people. It has a powerful 450-hp twin-turbo V6 engine, a flashy exterior, and plenty of luxury features.

8.  Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder has a 284-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine and can tow up to 6000 pounds. One of its main selling points is its high EPA fuel-economy rating. With 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, the Pathfinder tends to be a seven-seater keeper. Owners drive them for an average of 9.3 years.

7.  Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet Suburban is probably the most recognizable of all of General Motors’ full-size SUVs. For those who need to tow people and stuff, it is one of the roomiest on the market. Its 121.7 cubic feet of cargo space sits behind a 420-hp, 6.2-liter V8 engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Owners tend to keep their Suburbans for 9.3 years. 

6.  Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango can seat five or seven passengers and can tow up to 7,200 pounds. Its standard engine is a 293-hp, 3.6-liter V6. Fuel economy is 21 mpg combined for both rear- and all-wheel-drive models. It is kept for 9.6 years by those who buy them.

5.  Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer was built with daily commuting and holiday road trips in mind. The Base, SLT, and Limited trims all come with a 300-hp, turbocharged, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. The Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. Drivers keep them for 9.6 years.

4.  Toyota Sequoia

Kept for an average of 9.9 years, the Toyota Sequoia is loaded with modern technology such as automated emergency braking and blind spot monitoring. It features a 381-hp V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission on all trims. That includes either rear- or four-wheel drive.  It is considered to be one of the most reliable SUVs on the market despite also being one of the oldest.

3.  Toyota 4Runner

Through the years, the Toyota 4Runner has continued to be a favorite. Generally kept for 10 years by its owners, the 4Runner is purchased for its off-road strengths and rugged image. The 4.0-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission can be paired with either rear-, four-, or all-wheel drive.

2.  Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition features a comfy ride and a spacious cabin. The XLT and Limited models have a 375 hp V6 engine. Spring for the platinum version, though, and you’ll get 400 hp. As an added bonus, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. All of this entices owners to keep them for 10.1 years.

1.  Toyota Land Cruiser

At number one is the Toyota Land Cruiser. With owners keeping them for an average of 11.4 years, the Land Cruiser is a legend in its own right. The 5.7-liter V8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as its full-time four-wheel drive, all point to the Land Cruiser’s incredible off-roading ability. In fact, it was found to be one of the best vehicles for that activity.
