After spending millions developing the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the American carmaker wants buyers to embrace its first EV. While the Mach-E looks excellent on paper, it means nothing if its target demographic can’t afford it. Given this brand-new model’s popularity, some greedy dealerships have leaped to try and turn a quick profit.

According to Motor1, a tweet posted a few days ago demonstrated a dealership in Illinois asking an extra $10,000 for this EV. Additionally, potential buyers couldn’t even test drive the EV before buying. Following this discovery, the carmaker decided to step in and contact the dealership.

How expensive was this 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E?

According to the tweet that put this particular dealership on blast, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E in question is a First Edition Premium which should carry an MSRP of around $59,400. As you can see from the image above, the dealership in question asked $69,400 for this particular crossover. While the First Edition does offer some subtle touches, such as red stitching, it isn’t drastically different from a standard model.

Since it is still a Premium, this 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E still features a dual-motor setup. According to Autoblog, this gives you 346 hp and 428 lb-ft. In terms of range, the Premium trim also gets the greatest amount of range available, 270 miles.

While a $59,400 electric crossover is far from affordable, the extra $10,000 could easily put off even wealthy buyers. Since this is the carmaker’s first EV, Ford likely wants as many early adopters as possible before the brand goes fully electric soon. Since dealer markups are likely common across the country, the American carmaker took this opportunity to step in.

Ford decided to step in

In a follow-up tweet to the one exposing this 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E story, the brand’s North America Product Communications Manager chimed in. The follow-up tweet was short and sweet, simply stating:

“The markup has been removed from this Mach-E.”

As you might imagine, this move gives first-time EV buyers extra confidence that they’ll be able to walk into a dealership and pay the MSRP. However, there are likely dozens of markups across the country. While this Ford executive can’t go around calling dealerships all day, this move hopefully discourages other similar dealerships.

If you’re considering buying a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, keep in mind that these markups only exist as a result of a relatively small supply of EVs. As a result, waiting a few months should secure you a good deal.

If you’re looking at a 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, there is plenty to like. As mentioned above, the top trim level offers up to 270 miles of electric range, more than enough for daily commuters. Additionally, you don’t have to pay $59,000 to get one. That’s because this EV actually starts at a much more reasonable $42,895. Unfortunately, the only drawback here is that you might have to wait quite a while before actually getting one.
