11 Cars That Are Selling Worse Than the Toyota Mirai
The Toyota Mirai is the definition of a niche vehicle for a niche market. If you are unfamiliar with the Toyota Mirai, that is not surprising, as it is only available in select dealers in California. The Mirai is a vehicle that runs on hydrogen as a fuel source. What makes this concept so great compared to electric vehicles is that hydrogen-powered vehicles can refuel at fuel stations similar to gas stations instead of relying on EV charging stations. Unfortunately, hydrogen fuel stations are only available in some areas of California, making the Mirai a tough buy, as you’ll be unable to drive it outside the state without running out of fuel.
Despite this lack of infrastructure and extremely limited consumer base, the Toyota Mirai is not among the worst-selling vehicles in the U.S., with 2,185 units sold this year. Here are 11 cars that are selling worse than the Toyota Mirai.
1. Toyota Supra
The Toyota Supra may have a large fan base, especially with its new manual transmission offering, but it is still a very niche sports car. Nobody goes into a Toyota dealership and accidentally leaves with a Supra, and with a mere 1,778 units sold so far this year, it looks like the Supra will continue to be a sports car that is not seen on the roads as often as other sports car staples.
2. Lexus RZ
The Lexus RZ is a brand-new EV from this luxury division of Toyota. This is Lexus’ first EV, and they are doing so with an EV that shares many similarities with the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra, as they share the same platform. With 1,612 units sold so far, according to GoodCarBadCar, the Lexus RZ is bound to increase its sales as more examples hit dealer lots later this year.
3. Genesis GV60
If you were looking for a textbook niche vehicle, the Genesis GV60 and Toyota Mirai would be battling for first place. The GV60 is a fantastic EV from Genesis. However, it is not yet available in all 50 states, and it exists in one of the last-shopped segments in the industry: subcompact luxury SUVs. Only 1,581 units have been sold so far this year.
4. Lexus LS
Lexus is a fantastic brand full of iconic luxury vehicles. The Lexus LS model continues to be a flagship sedan for the company, although it is not selling as much as it used to. This is simply because the full-size executive sedan market is not a popular segment, and the starting price for one of these vehicles is nearly $80,000. Just 1,395 units have been sold so far this year.
5. Volvo S90
The Volvo 90-Series, also known as the S90, suffers from the same fate as the Lexus LS; it is a full-size sedan. With Volvo already being a niche company, and full-size executive sedans lagging in popularity, its low sales of 1,374 units is not surprising.
6. Lexus LC
The Lexus LC’s low sales are no surprise to anyone. This hyper-expensive luxury sports car starts at $99,050 MSRP, according to Lexus. Only 987 units have been sold so far this year.
7. Lexus RC
If you thought large executive sedans were unpopular in the current automotive marketplace, the sports coupe is no different. The Lexus RC is a sports coupe that’s not a hot seller in the lineup. Its high price tag doesn’t help sales either. Lexus has only moved around 978 units so far this year.
8. Genesis G90
Genesis is a growing brand that is doing well. However, just like the Lexus LS and Volvo S90, the Genesis G90 is a large sedan that isn’t attracting buyers, with only 811 units sold so far this year.
9. Hyundai Nexo
The Hyundai Nexo is in direct competition with the Toyota Mirai as it is also a hydrogen fuel-powered vehicle. However, while the Mirai is a sleek sedan, the Nexo is a compact SUV. In theory, this should make it more practical and appealing to shoppers. However, the Nexo is hardly selling at all, especially compared to its Toyota rival. The Nexo has sold around 139 units so far this year.
10. Mazda MX-30
The Mazda MX-30 is one of Mazda’s largest failures in recent years in the U.S. This quirky electric crossover was met with bad reviews and even worse sales. After only around two years on the market, and only available in California during that time, the MX-30 has been discontinued in the U.S. With this discontinuation, only 94 have been sold this year.
11. Hyundai Accent
The Hyundai Accent is a good car. Well, it was a good car. With its discontinuation, dealers are simply selling off all remaining inventory. Only 31 units have been sold this year, but that doesn’t exactly speak to the nameplate’s lack of popularity but rather to a lack of available new units in the U.S.
