As the year winds down, it normally marks the beginning of a time of reflection. There have been several vehicle models to hit the market this year with some of them hitting the right notes with consumers. Here are the 12 cars nominated for North American Car of the Year.

1. BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 158 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Coupled to an automatic 8-speed transmission, the all-wheel-drive version has a top speed of 155 mph and could go from 0 to 62 mph in just under 6 seconds.

2. Cadillac CT5

The CT5 was launched in April at the New York Auto Show. It comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 237 hp and is coupled to an automatic 10-speed transmission. The CT5 also includes automatic emergency braking and forward collision alert.

3. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Though many already have their eyes on the 2020 mid-engine Stingray, the 2019 Stingray model is still one of the best sports cars available. Its V8 engine produces 455 hp coupled to either an automatic or manual transmission. The car’s chassis further provides great handling and ride abilities.

4. Hyundai Sonata

Another car to make it to the shortlist is the Hyundai Sonata. The car combines impressive styling with modern features. The Sonata has three gas-powered engine options as well as a plug-in hybrid to increase fuel savings. Apart from the base model, the Hyundai Sonata comes with several drive-assistance features such as lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking.

5. Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is a great option for first-time buyers. With an engine that produces 130 hp, the combined fuel rating of 27 mpg makes it a great choice for those looking for value. The latest driver-assist technology and long warranty only add to the vehicle’s merits.

6. Mazda3

All Mazda3 models come fitted with a four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine coupled to either a manual or automatic six-speed transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but consumers have the option of all-wheel drive with an automatic transmission.

7. Mercedes-Benz A-Class

What would a list of cars of the year be without a Mercedes-Benz? This year, the A-Class makes the shortlist. The car comes fitted with a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that makes 188 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to an automatic seven-speed transmission and comes with front-wheel drive as standard but with an optional all-wheel drive. With a balanced and responsive steering feel, the car delivers a controlled and comfortable ride.

8. Polestar 1

The Polestar 1 is a hybrid sports coupe and is a two-door version of the Volvo S90 Sedan. Though production has already begun, the Polestar won’t be available for the public until the end of 2019 or early 2020.

9. Porsche 911

The 911 has been one of the most long-lasting pure sports cars ever made. This version of the Porsche 911 utilizes an all-new generation that features meticulously engineered mechanicals and an evolved design.

10. Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy comes with a flat-4 2.5-liter engine that gives off 175 hp though a 247 hp flat-6 engine is optional. With the standard all-wheel drive, the Subaru Legacy still delivers impressive fuel economy ratings with 29 mpg combined. Furthermore, the vehicle’s crash-avoidance technology has earned accolades from the NHTSA and the IIHS.

11. Toyota Supra

Built with BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, which still delivers its well-known power and tons of low-end torque, the Toyota Supra produces 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque.

12. Volkswagen Arteon

The Arteon makes use of a four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine coupled to an automatic eight-speed transmission. While front-wheel drive comes standard, there is an optional all-wheel drive. The Arteon utilizes an adaptive suspension which either manually or automatically adjusts according to your driving style.
