A 13-year-old boy living in New Jersey decided to have a bit of fun, and must have thought How hard can driving actually be?, because he stole a Toyota Camry and took it for a joy ride. His misadventure went really well, until it didn’t.

This kid lives in Toms River on the Jersey Shore. For some reason, after he stole the car he chose to drive into the village. Authorities say he hit 40 mph on Brokaw Boulevard, so speeding a bit but no daredevil speeds. This youth must have already received driving instruction from someone because, honestly, he was doing pretty well for a minute.

Suddenly, he swerved off the road and ran headlong into a tree. Why? The juvenile driver reports that he saw his mother coming his way in the opposite lane.

Maybe his mother was home from work early and the car thief hadn’t expected to see her. Or perhaps she actually spotted him and made eye contact, so he freaked out. But most likely just the sight of her reminded him how much trouble he could be in.

The bad news is the boy suffered a broken nose and some kind of hip injury. He was taken to Jersey Shore Hospital. The even badder news is that while he was convalescing police arrived and charged him with reckless driving and operating without a license.

The worst news is that he was then released into his mother’s care. I imagine this kid’s family is less-than-pleased.
