15 models are more likely to hit 250k miles than ‘America’s favorite truck’
Ford loves to remind the U.S.A. that its “F-150” is the bestselling pickup in the country: “America’s favorite truck.” And while many F-150s have long lives as hardworking fleet vehicles, there are actually 15 other vehicle models statistically more likely to see 250,000 miles. And it may be because of how they are used. Here are this year’s rankings:
Rank | Make/Model | % Chance of Lasting 250k+ Miles |
---|---|---|
1 | Toyota Tundra | 36.6% |
2 | Toyota Sequoia | 36.4% |
3 | Toyota 4Runner | 26.8% |
4 | Toyota Tacoma | 26.7% |
5 | Toyota Highlander Hybrid | 25.9% |
6 | Honda Ridgeline | 25.8% |
7 | Chevrolet Suburban | 22.0% |
8 | Toyota Avalon | 22.0% |
9 | Lexus GX | 20.7% |
10 | Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | 18.8% |
11 | GMC Yukon XL | 17.9% |
12 | Chevrolet Tahoe | 17.7% |
13 | Honda Pilot | 17.5% |
14 | Honda Accord | 16.6% |
15 | GMC Sierra 1500 | 16.1% |
16 | Ford F-150 | 15.8% |
Yup, Toyota swept the top five places this year. I swear this data isn’t biased. It actually comes from the analysts at the iSeeCars website who combed through the registration for 400 million light-duty vehicles over the years.
They found that the average vehicle has an 8.6% chance of hitting 250,000 miles. The Ford F-150 goes way beyond average, with 15.8% of trucks being re-registered with an odometer at 250k or higher. Of course an assortment of other trucks, SUVs, and sedans came in with a greater likelihood. But this raw registration data may be a bit misleading.
It’s good news that so many Honda Ridgelines are lasting so long. But an F-150 could drive 100,000 miles towing loads that would snap a Ridgeline in half. So the percentage of Ridgelines making it to ultra-high mileage may reflect what their owners choose to use them for.
Truck-based SUVs also do very well on this list. And that makes sense, the chances of a Suburban or Sequoia being beat up by the same towing or plowing so many trucks do is slim. So the average SUV on the road is much older.
A very important fact to note is that the analysts didn’t include heavy duty pickup trucks in the overall list. So no Super Duties or Silverado, Sierra, or Ram HDs. The average pickup truck has a 19.4% chance of reaching 250k miles. While the F-150’s longevity is below average for trucks, the Super Duty series lasts longer than the average truck. Here is the ranking for heavy-duty pickup trucks:
Rank | Make/Model | % Chance of Lasting 250k+ Miles |
---|---|---|
1 | Ram 3500 | 42.6% |
2 | Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD | 29.6% |
3 | GMC Sierra 2500HD | 29.1% |
4 | Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD | 28.7% |
5 | Ford F-350 Super Duty | 28.3% |
6 | Ford F-250 Super Duty | 27.4% |
7 | Ram 2500 | 27.2% |
8 | GMC Sierra 3500HD | 26.0% |
