18-Year-Old Slams Honda Accord Into a House While Vaping
Talk about distracted driving. One teenager in Pinal County, Arizona, has been charged with a variety of offenses after driving his Honda Accord sedan into a house while vaping. No one was hurt in the crash, except maybe the wallet of the driver once all of the charges go through.
The driver of the Honda Accord was vaping at the time of the crash
According to the local 12 News station in Arizona, the driver of the Honda Accord was not impaired when the incident occurred. However, the 18-year-old was vaping when the Accord crashed into the side of the house. It was around 12:35 AM when the driver accidentally went off the road, apparently distracted by his vape pen.
The Accord had one passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident. When the police arrived on the scene, the driver of the Honda Accord cooperated and did not show any signs of impairment. He noted he was driving between 30 mph and 40 mph, which was not an appropriate speed for the area.
Inside the home, a woman and her two children were unharmed after the crash. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said the driver would be charged with speeding, reckless driving, criminal damage, and endangerment.
It is too late for this Honda Accord, but there are ways to make sure this doens’t happen to you
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office gave an interview on the scene to update the public on the crash. “Folks, we wish reminders like these weren’t needed, but please watch your speed through neighborhoods and keep your eyes on the road,” said PCSO Sheriff Mark Lamb.
Ahead of the holiday season, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) gave 12 News some tips to help stay safe on the roads. While most of these might seem obvious, the driver of the Honda Accord could have used a refresher course.
The ADOT suggests not to speed or drive aggressively, especially in residential areas. Do not drive under the influence of any mind-altering substances. Avoid distractions while driving, such as vaping. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle is buckled before heading anywhere.
What Is distracted driving?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is “any activity that diverts attention from driving.” This can include talking on the phone, texting, eating, drinking, and yes, even vaping. The NHTSA says that driving should have your full attention while behind the wheel, and any other activities will increase your risk of crashing.
In 2019, 3,142 people were killed in accidents with distracted driving as the cause. As cell phone use continues to increase, the occurrence of distracted driving continues to increase as well. If you insist on vaping while behind the wheel, do it while completely stopped and not on the road. Driving a Honda Accord into a home is an expensive mistake that you can avoid.
