Car recalls are a nearly daily occurrence in the U.S. In 2021 alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued more than 1,000 recalls affecting 35 million vehicles and other equipment. One of the agency’s latest recalls affects one of the most popular all-wheel drive sedans: the Subaru Impreza. Here’s what you need to know about the Subaru recall.

Which cars are included in the Subaru Impreza recall?

According to Cars, the latest Subaru recall issue affects Impreza models from 2017 to 2019. It’s Subaru’s first recall since Dec. 2021 and affects 188,397 base and Premium trim Impreza models. The problem affects the headlights as the reflector housings can affect their performance. In a notice, Subaru stated, “the left and right side reflex reflector and left side low beam reflector may inadequately reflect light.”

According to Jalopnik, this started with an investigation by the NHTSA in 2019 that determined that the left front halogen light assembly was not performing correctly. Subaru replaced the mold inserts for the assembly only for the NHTSA to find that more parts were failing, like the low beam and side reflex reflectors. 

The NHTSA recall report states Subaru petitioned the agency, arguing that the problem was not severe enough for a recall. That petition was not successful. In the NHTSA’s report, the agency recounts that the improper amount of reflected light may increase the risk of a crash.

What should Impreza owners do about this recall?

If you have a base or Premium trim of the Subaru Impreza from the 2017 to 2019 model years, you are covered by this recall and will be notified. Subaru will send out notices to owners starting in early October, according to Autoblog. The company will replace the entire headlight assembly free of charge under recall number WRG-22.

How can you check for recalls on a Subaru Impreza?

This is not the first recall for the Subaru Impreza for these model years. They were a part of a Subaru recall in 2021 that covered nearly 200,000 models, according to Torque News. That Subaru recall required an update to the engine control module (ECM) programming. The ignition coils also needed to be replaced, as they could degrade over time and cause issues with starting or stalling. 

Impreza models from 2021 were also recalled in Jan. 2021 for a loose nut that could prevent the transmission from functioning correctly. The loose nut could cause the gear selector to malfunction.
