If you’re a fan of pickup trucks, it doesn’t get much better than the Lamborghini LM002. With the V12 out of the Countach sitting under its hood and an aesthetic designed for the military, this is one of the weirdest Lamborghinis ever made. In total, only a few hundred examples of these trucks ever left the production line. Out of that small-batch, only four of these trucks went on to compete in various rallies.

The truck we’re looking at today comes courtesy of We Are Curated, a vintage exotic car dealership in Miami, FL, where it is listed for sale. While this truck was built to go basically anywhere, the manufacturer never officially ran a racing team.

How much does a Lamborghini LM002 cost?

If you wanted a brand-new Lamborghini LM002 back in 1987, it would’ve cost you around $120,000. In today’s money, we’re talking about $277,831. Since this truck dubbed the “Rambo Lambo” was originally envisioned for the Italian military, it has a very chunky and robust aesthetic.

Under the Lamborghini LM002’s hood lives a 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V12 producing 444 hp and 368 lb-ft. While that sounds like a considerable amount of punch, this truck weighed in at around 6,780 pounds. All of that power went to all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. In terms of all-out performance, this truck could hit 60 mph in around 7.7 seconds, says Car and Driver.

While the Lamborghini LM002 had solid bones, it would need some serious engineering to make it competitive for rallying. According to Lambocars, the Italian carmaker wanted to take its truck racing; however, it didn’t have enough funds to do so.

How do you convert the Rambo Lambo into a rally truck?

Thankfully, the Lamborghini LM002’s rallying dreams didn’t die out at the hands of poor finances. According to Lambocars, Andrea Barenghi, a racing driver, bought an LM002 and spent over a year preparing it to compete in the Dakar Rally.

To take this massive machine off-roading, it needed some major upgrades. The main thing was to mount an enormous 800-liter fuel tank so it could cover long distances. From there, the V12 got a power bump up to 600 hp. However, one of the biggest improvements was removing over 500 kg of overall weight.

In terms of the chassis itself, the Lamborghini LM002 turned out to be robust enough, not needing structural reinforcements. However, the truck got a brand-new suspension to handle rough terrain. Unfortunately, the suspension wasn’t tough enough to endure the full length of the race, and the team running it had to forfeit due to a lack of spare parts.

How many Lamborghini LM002 examples are there?

A total of 328 Lamborghini LM002 examples left the factory from 1986 to 1993. However, only 49 of those ever made it into the united states. According to We Are Curated, only four examples ever took place in various rally races. Of these, just two took place in a Dakar race. Aside from being a unique truck, these Rambo Lambos are an important part of Lamborghini history, especially as we’ll likely never see another truck quite like this.
