A hypercar stands as the ultimate top-of-the-line for technology and performance, outdoing nearly all other vehicles and pushing the boundaries. Mercedes-AMG has been working on a hypercar for several years, and this one will be a plug-in hybrid. It’s already sold out, even though it’s just now making appearances for testing. Here’s what we know so far about the Mercedes-AMG One.

The Mercedes-AMG One

Now in the final stages of its testing at the Immendingen Test Center in Germany, the One is a plug-in-hybrid hypercar from Mercedes-AMG. The car’s powertrain is based on a Mercedes Formula One powertrain.

Previously called Project One, the One has a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine supported by four electric motors. With two electric motors at the front axle, the car has all-wheel drive, which Formula One cars do not have. It also has one electric motor with the engine and one with the turbocharger. Together the system generates more than 1000 hp. One can rocket from zero to 125 MPH in less than six seconds and has a top speed of more than 217 MPH.

The two-seater car’s active aerodynamics include a rear wing that extends plus active louvers located on top of the front wheel arches, a big shark fin connected to an air intake above the roof, and a rear diffuser. Just 275 are being produced, and each is priced at around $2.7 million. All of them are sold out.

The tests take a look at the car’s powertrain and active aerodynamics and engines at full power. Mercedes has released a new video and new photos of the pre-production cars being tested. The next round of tests for the car will be held at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, although there are no plans to break any records there.

The One hypercar is not a usual EV

The Mercedes-AMG One will be quite different from a regular plug-in-hybrid car you’d find at the grocery store or mall. Like Formula One cars, the One will have an engine that uses electric turbochargers. That technology has been available in race cars for just a few years but hasn’t previously been available on non-race cars.

Including the electric turbocharger allows the turbine and compressor to spin faster and have almost no turbo lag, a common issue for traditional turbocharged engines. The electric turbocharger also gives the engine a quick response time plus increased power. While the One’s electric range of 15.5 miles is on the lower side when compared to other plug-in hybrids, its speed and acceleration are far beyond the average plug-in hybrid.

The future for the Mercedes-AMG One and electric turbocharged cars

The Mercedes-AMG One fits into the Mercedes plan to stop producing gas engines. Although Mercedes has manufactured electric vehicles since 2016, the advances in the One open some new possibilities. The electric turbocharger could be added to future supercars and other cars with turbocharged engines.

The Mercedes-AMG One could also usher in a new trend for celebrities and other wealthy people to switch from their gas cars to modern electric hypercars. David Coulthard has reportedly purchased the new One, the former Formula One driver, as well as by actor Mark Wahlberg.

There isn’t a delivery date for the Mercedes-AMG One yet, but Car and Driver expects it to be scheduled for the beginning of next year. Most of us won’t have a chance to buy or even see the Mercedes-AMG One, but some of the technologies it explores will likely appear in other Mercedes vehicles in the future.
