2 Ford SUVs That Are Flying off Dealership Lots and 2 That Aren’t
Ford is one of the most well-known automakers in the world, and the Detroit-based company has been successful for so long due to its long list of great vehicles. That said, not all Fords are great, and this is especially true regarding their sales numbers. Here’s a look at Ford SUV sales for two models selling very well and two others selling terribly.
Ford SUV sales for these two models are going very well right now
Ford Authority recently published Ford’s sales data for the first quarter of 2023, and overall, its SUV segment is doing great. As far as growth goes, two models are at the top, though one other SUV model is close behind. The Ford Expedition is the automaker’s full-size SUV option; year-to-date, it saw massive growth.
Ford has already sold over 19,000 units of the full-size SUV. In the same period last year, the automaker only sold about 9,700 units. That’s a difference of nearly 10,000 units. In percentage terms, the Expedition saw a 99% growth compared to last year. The other SUV that saw the most significant increase was the Ford Bronco.
In the first quarter of last year, Ford sold about 23,500 units of the Bronco. So far this year, it’s sold over 32,400 units. That’s a difference of almost 9,000 units. Percentage-wise, the Bronco’s sales have grown by over 37% year-to-date.
Finally, the Explorer also had an excellent first quarter, as its numbers grew by about 36% compared to 2022.
These two SUVs are not doing so hot
On the other end of the spectrum, the Ford SUV that did the worst shouldn’t be a surprise. Ford has only sold about 1,600 units of the Ford EcoSport in the first quarter of 2023.
That’s compared to the 8,426 units that it sold in the same period last year. That’s a roughly 80% drop in sales. That massive decline shouldn’t surprise Ford fans since the automaker discontinued the SUV after the 2022 model year.
What may be a surprise is the Ford SUV that had the second-worst drop. That honor goes to the Ford Escape, which is the Detroit-based automaker’s compact SUV option. Unlike the EcoSport, the Escape is still around, so its massive drop can’t be easily explained away. In the first quarter of 2022, Ford sold almost 40,000 units of the compact SUV.
That made it the third best-selling vehicle in Ford’s lineup. However, Ford has only sold about 21,000 units of the Escape year-to-date. That’s a drop of over 47%. It also means that the Escape is no longer the third best-selling Ford vehicle, as options like the Maverick and the Bronco have overtaken it.
Ford SUV sales aren’t the only thing working for the automaker
Despite the death of the EcoSport and the dramatic decline of the Escape, Ford still had a successful first quarter. Overall, the company sold over 450,000 units so far this year. That’s about 40,000 more cars than the company sold in the first quarter of 2022. In percentage terms, Ford’s sales grew by almost 11% compared to last year.
Unsurprisingly, much of that growth can be attributed to Ford’s trucks. The F-Series, which includes the F-150 and the brand-new F-150 Lightning, is the best-selling option in Ford’s lineup. So far in 2023, the company has already sold over 170,000 units of those full-size trucks.
That’s almost 30,000 more units than in the same period last year. In percentage terms, the F-Series also saw a good amount of growth as its sales grew by 21%.
