These 2 Full-Size SUVs May Be Twinning, but They’re Not Winning at the Gas Pump
It’s no secret that gas prices are pretty high right now, and that has many people searching for small or otherwise economical SUVs. Yet sometimes buying small isn’t an option, and if that’s the case you may be wondering which full-size SUVs will be the easiest on your wallet at the gas pump. If that’s the case, there are two large SUVs you may want to skip – the 2022 Chevy Suburban and the 2022 GMC Yukon XL. While these two full-size SUVs may be mechanical twins, they’re both the second-most expensive SUVs to fill up with gas. Here’s why Consumer Reports advises you think twice about the Suburban or Yukon XL if you’re trying to save cash.
The 2022 Chevy Suburban and 2022 GMC Yukon XL are incredibly expensive to fill up with gas right now
To determine how much it will cost to fill up the 2022 Chevy Suburban and 2022 GMC Yukon XL, Consumer Reports used the average national gas price of $4.12 on April 21, 2022. Calculate that times the Suburban and Yukon XL’s 28-gallon gas tank and it will cost you $115 to fill them each up. Both the 2022 Suburban and 2022 Yukon XL get 448 miles from a full tank of gas. Their fuel economy isn’t exactly great, at 11 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
The Chevy Suburban isn’t exactly cheap
On top of the high gas prices and the amount of fuel it requires, the 2022 Chevy Suburban isn’t exactly cheap. The 2022 Suburban’s starting price is $52,400. There are a whole variety of 2022 Chevrolet Suburban trim levels to choose from, and packages to add on, making it even more expensive. The 2022 Suburban LS comes with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. That’s matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with four-wheel drive.
The 2022 Chevy Suburban LS also comes with LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban has an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a whole slew of safety features including forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
The GMC Yukon XL gas is super expensive
The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is even more expensive than its Suburban cousin. Its price starts at $53,295 for the base model SLE. There are three additional Yukon XL trim levels available, and three available engine options, including the same 5.3-liter V8 engine that makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque that’s in the Suburban. The AT4 trim level comes standard with four-wheel drive, but it’s only optional on the other trim levels.
Both the 2022 Chevy Suburban and the 2022 GMC Yukon XL are two of the most enticing full-size SUVs out there, yet neither will do you any favors when it’s time to fill them up. You’ll have to consider whether the advantages of the Suburban or Yukon XL outweigh the downsides of spending more than $100 every time you have to fill up.
