Many people and a lot of automakers are moving toward EVs, but not all folks are currently ready to go all-in on EVs. That’s where hybrids come in, and they can be a great compromise option that many automakers, such as Hyundai, offer. With that being said, all-wheel drive is also an option that many car shoppers want, and currently, Hyundai only has two cars in the 2022 model year that have both a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive.

1. 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

According to Hyundai, the Tucson Hybrid is one of two traditional hybrid models with all-wheel drive from its catalog. The Tucson Hybrid is a compact crossover starting at a price tag of under $30,000 MSRP. This Hyundai SUV is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor to get 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and has all-wheel drive as standard.

That hybrid powertrain allows the Tucson Hybrid to get about 38 mpg combined. In comparison, the standard Tucson only gets about 30 mpg combined, which means that the hybrid version has an advantage of about 8 mpg. Aside from that, the Tucson Hybrid is fairly similar to the regular Tucson, and as such, it’s an excellent option for families. In fact, the Tucson is currently Hyundai’s best-selling model.

2. 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid

The Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid is the other traditional hybrid model with all-wheel drive from the automaker’s lineup. It’s a mid-size crossover with the option for either two or three rows of seats. This makes the Santa Fe Hybrid an excellent option for families, as it’s both spacious and efficient. It has a starting price tag of about $34,000 MSRP and has a lot of similarities with the Tucson Hybrid.

For example, it has a similar powertrain setup to the Tucson Hybrid. This Hyundai SUV also has a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor to get about 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Once again, that powertrain is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. 

However, since the Santa Fe Hybrid is a larger SUV than the Tucson Hybrid, a slight fuel economy difference exists. The Santa Fe Hybrid gets about 36 mpg combined, which is significantly better than the standard version’s 27 mpg combined. That’s a difference of about 9 mpg. Overall, the Santa Fe Hybrid is a solid SUV that offers a lot of space and features for families.

Hyundai also offers PHEV versions of those two great SUVs

Additionally, Hyundai also offers a PHEV version of these two hybrids. PHEVs, which stand for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, sit between traditional hybrids like the Santa Fe Hybrid and full EVs, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Unlike an electric car, a PHEV still has an engine that requires gas, so it’s not the cleanest option in terms of emissions.

However, unlike a traditional hybrid, a PHEV has a sizable battery and electric motor, allowing it to drive around purely on electric power for a short amount of time. The amount of electric range that a PHEV has will vary significantly from car to car, but 30 miles of range is about average for a PHEV. This is not something a traditional hybrid can do, as a conventional hybrid mainly relies on the car’s engine to do all the work.
