Toyota produces SUVs that can last for 200,000 miles and beyond. These SUVs may last long, but they aren’t without faults. All three of these long-lasting Toyota SUV models share 1 major red flag.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is too thirsty for the city

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a legendary SUV because of its longevity and off-roading prowess. The Land Cruiser is a huge part of Toyota’s rich history, but the large SUV has a major red flag that consumers should know about.

The full-size SUV has terrible fuel economy. Vehicles of the Land Cruiser’s size aren’t known for having great fuel economy, but the Land Cruiser’s gas mileage is exceptionally bad. After a long hiatus, Toyota brought the Land Cruiser back for the 2021 model year. This model only achieves 13 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway.

This fuel economy may sound normal, but consumers are quickly turning their backs on thirsty trucks and SUVs as gas prices rise. The Land Cruiser could easily last for two decades of ownership when well-maintained, but imagine how much it would cost to fuel that thing.

The Toyota Land Cruiser has earned its place in history as one of the most reliable SUVs ever produced. That being said, it’s tough to want a Land Cruiser, knowing how expensive its costs of ownership could get. This large SUV is great for exploring, but it can chug gasoline so quickly it’ll make your head spin.

The Toyota Sequoia is just as thirsty as the Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Sequoia is another reliable large SUV that’s in the same boat as the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Sequoia is the second most reliable SUV behind the Land Cruiser on a list compiled by iSeeCars.com. Dependability doesn’t save this large SUV from being a pain to refuel.

The Sequoia has been around for two decades. The large SUV model has been a gas guzzler for many years. The 2022 model year achieves a combined 15 miles per gallon. Land Cruiser and Sequoia models typically have poor fuel economy (like most large SUVs).

Thankfully, Toyota has decided to flip the script. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia will come standard with a hybrid powertrain. Will consumers finally get a fuel-efficient Sequoia?

In recent years Toyota has shifted its focus toward producing more environmentally friendly vehicles. The Japanese automaker’s lineup consists of many hybrid options.

Toyota is rolling out its Beyond Zero Initiative, starting with the bZ4X. Consumers are showing an interest in vehicles with better gas mileage, and Toyota is adjusting to meet the demand. If the Sequoia can get a hybrid powertrain, just about any model in Toyota’s lineup can as well.
