2 Major Safety Organizations Can’t Agree on the 2022 Toyota Sienna
If you’re looking for the safest vehicle for your family, chances are you’ve at least considered the 2022 Toyota Sienna. It’s a great minivan with a solid reputation from a longstanding auto manufacturer. It’s also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+. Sounds perfect, right? Well, hang on just a second – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) doesn’t love it quite as much as the IIHS. Let’s take a look at where the differences lie between these two organizations’ views of the 2022 Toyota Sienna.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna safety ratings from the IIHS are through the roof
The IIHS loves the 2022 Toyota Sienna. It gives the Sienna its top honor, the Top Safety Pick+ award. To get this title, a vehicle has to have good scores in:

The NHTSA disagrees with the IIHS
The NHTSA also evaluated the 2022 Toyota Sienna and its findings were less enthusiastic. The Sienna gets just 4/5 stars for its overall crash rating and 3/5 for the front driver side. The front passenger side gets 4/5 stars. However, side crash ratings are all good and the rollover rating is 4/5 stars. Overall, the NHTSA does give the 2022 Sienna five stars, which does say something about the Sienna’s safety.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna LE comes with important safety features like forward-collision mitigation. This warns you of a potential collision. In some situations, emergency braking will also be deployed. The Sienna LE also has lane departure warning with steering assist. This lets you know if your van is drifting into another lane and you don’t have a directional on. It can even steer you back into your lane. In addition, adaptive cruise control comes in the base model Sienna, helping you keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Finally, automatic high beams and blind-spot monitor are standard. Blind-spot monitor alerts you to a vehicle in your blind spot.
How much will you pay for the Sienna?
The 2022 Toyota Sienna LE price starts at $35,775. The Sienna LE (and all Sienna trim levels) come with a hybrid powertrain. This makes 245 hp with its four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. You can upgrade to all-wheel-drive. The LE has seating for seven, but you can upgrade to eight.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna LE also has a stylish exterior with LED headlights and power-sliding side doors (super helpful when you’re coming out of the grocery store with kids). Inside, you’ll get a three-zone automatic climate control system, sunshades in the second row (so your baby won’t be blinded in their car seat), and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna LE interior also comes with seven USB ports, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a six-speaker sound system. It’s also compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna ratings may be contradictory, but overall they’re both pretty good. While the IIHS gives the Sienna its top safety award, the NHTSA finds some bigger faults with it. Still, its overall safety rating of five stars may mean that you want to consider the Sienna anyway.
