In a world of huge SUVs, Jeep took the “go big or go home” challenge to heart by stretching already substantial Jeep SUVs – the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer – into extended-length L models. The pair of Jeep SUVs recently made it into the top 10 on a list of the 12 Biggest 2023 SUVs ranked by cargo space. While the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L provides more cargo capacity than the 2023 Grand Wagoneer L, bigger might not be better for your family.

The 12 Biggest 2023 SUVs

The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L landed in eighth place, and the less impressively named 2023 Jeep Wagoneer nearly broke into the top three with its fourth place ranking on the U.S. News list of the “12 Biggest SUVs of 2023.” Based on maximum cargo capacity, the rankings also provide a brief overview of the specs of the largest SUVs on the market. We’ll focus on the two Jeep SUVs from the list. 

The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L

Reports for cargo capacity vary from each source, so for comparison’s sake, we’ll only use U.S. News maximum cargo space values, which, for the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, is 112.9 cubic feet. While that’s an impressive number, it was only good enough for eighth place between the Nissan Armada with 95.4 cubic feet and the Lincoln Navigator with 120.2 cubic feet. 

The 2023 Grand Wagoneer L features a 130-inch wheelbase, seven inches longer than the non-L version, and a 12-inch longer overall length. The extended length equates to nearly 16 cubic-foot more cargo space behind the third-row seat. 

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer

While the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L have the same exterior dimensions, the Wagoneer L makes better use of its interior space. The Jeep Wagoneer L has 130.9 cubic feet of interior cargo space. That’s enough to put it fourth on the U.S. News list behind the 2023 Cadillac Escalade with its 142.8 cubic feet and ahead of the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe’s 125.9 cubic feet. 

Which Jeep SUV is better, the 2023 Wagoneer L or Grand Wagoneer L?

Although it has 18 cubic feet more cargo capacity, the base 2023 Jeep Wagoneer features a less powerful 5.7-liter V8 hybrid powertrain with 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. Upper Wagoneer L trims have a 420-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with 468 lb-ft of torque. 

In contrast, the 2023 Grand Wagoneer uses a 471-hp 6.4-liter V8 with 455 lb-ft of torque in the base model and a 510-hp version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter I6 with 500 lb-ft of torque in the upper Grand Wagoneer L trims. The Grand Wagoneer is significantly more luxurious inside and out, features standard second-row captain’s chairs, and has all-wheel drive. 

In addition to cargo capacity, the Wagoneer L wins the price comparison. While the Grand Wagoneer L starts at $91,495, the 2023 Wagoneer L Series I MSRP starts at $62,495. The combination of more cargo space, standard seating for eight, and its lower price puts the 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L ahead of the Grand Wagoneer regarding the best large SUVs for families with children.
