2 Things MotorTrend Hated About the New Chevrolet Silverado
Over 400,000 Chevy Silverados have been sold in America in 2019 so far, but not everybody loves the Silverado. MotorTrend had a lot of good things to say about the Silverado, but it also had a lot of critiques. Here are the two things that MotorTrend hated about the Silverado.
A bad ride
The Silverado has a wide selection of engine options, including an extremely powerful, 6.2-liter V8 that gets 420-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. However, if you don’t want to cough up the money to get that high-powered engine, your Silverado may have some issues. MotorTrend, in particular, says that the 5.3-liter V8 engine had a laggy throttle response.
The standard 4.3-liter V6 engine was nothing to write home about either. However, the fact that the only engine option that sets it apart from other pickups was its most pricey one meant that MotorTrend had to dock points off the Silverado’s score.
Further hurting the Silverado is the fact that the suspension system of the Silverado wasn’t great. Every single one of MotorTrend’s test drivers hated the bumpy ride that the Silverado gave them. One test driver described the ride as “jittery.” Another simply said that the Silverado’s rivals had a more comfortable ride. The Ram 1500, which was MotorTrend’s favorite work truck, was a truck that MotorTrend described as having a very comfortable ride.
That said, although the ride quality wasn’t good, the Silverado isn’t a cramped truck by any means. Car and Driver reports that the Silverado has plenty of headroom and legroom. Depending on the trim, the Silverado can get between three to four feet of headroom and legroom. But of course, having more room doesn’t stop the truck from being jittery.
An ugly interior
The other big issue that MotorTrend had about the Silverado was that its interior was ugly. Chevy recently redesigned the Silverado, and according to MotorTrend, Chevy seemed to have put a lot of money and effort in making the Silverado look good on the outside, but not on the inside. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but even General Motors, the company that owns Chevy, agrees with MotorTrend.
GM thinks that the Silverado’s lackluster interior design is the reason why Ram and Ford are selling better than the Silverado is. Both GM and MotorTrend have mentioned a lot of problems with the Silverado’s interior design, and some of them are similar.
For instance, GM thinks that the Silverado’s interior doesn’t have an elegant design, and MotorTrend agrees. A MotorTrend test driver said that the Silverado was just “a sea of black.” Furthermore, another test driver said that the interior of the Silverado looked “cheap” for what the truck is selling at. GM also agrees with that assessment, and GM aims to increase the level of craftsmanship and premium feel that the interior of the Silverado will have.
That said, MotorTrend didn’t hate the interior features that the Silverado had. It depends on the trim, but some Silverados will have interior features such as leather seats and an 8-inch touchscreen display. These features are considered premium options for the Silverado though.
Price points
The Silverado is an affordable truck, as it starts at about $30,000 and can get up to $55,000 without including additional features. However, the ones that MotorTrend tested were worth between $54,000 and $65,000. If interior design is an important thing for you, for those price tags, other trucks will probably be better.
For instance, the Ram 1500 starts at about $31,000. That’s the same truck that the CEO of GM thinks the Silverado can’t compete against due to the differences in their interior design.
