AutoBlog reports that the 2014 Honda Civic is a member of the Civic’s ninth generation that began with the redesigned 2012 model. After the 2012 Honda Civic flopped with the automotive critics, Honda quickly regrouped by refreshing the Civic sedan for 2013 and the Civic coupe for 2014. While the coupe received a redesigned exterior with “more angular, aggressive lines,” the sedan retained its previous styling. 

The most significant change was adopting a continuous variable transmission (CVT) that replaced the previous five-speed automatic. The CVT allows an “infinite number of gear ratios to optimize fuel economy, and ideally, performance.” However, most reports indicate that CVT-equipped vehicles feel less inspired compared to those featuring traditional automatic transmissions, but there was an option for a manual transmission if you prefer. 

The 2014 Honda Civic featured four available powertrains, according to Edmunds. The 143-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder producing 129 ft-lbs of torque propels the lightweight Civic well enough and includes an “Econ mode” that favors fuel economy over performance. The 1.8-liter paired with the CVT gives the 2014 Civic an EPA-estimated 30 mpg city and 39 mpg highway rating. In addition, the Civic sedan HF features aerodynamic exterior touches and wheels with “low-rolling-resistance tires” to get up to 41 mpg on the highway. 

The 2014 Civic Hybrid features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 11 horsepower paired with a 23-horsepower electric motor to get up to 47 mpg on the highway and 44 mpg in the city. Another fuel-saving option is the Civic Natural Gas model. It runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) and gets an estimated “27/38 mpg City/Highway gasoline equivalent rating.”

Then there’s the performance-oriented 2014 Civic Si with a 201-horsepower twin-cam 2.4-liter four-cylinder. AutoBlog rates the Civic Si’s performance as “marvelous” after testing it at the track.

Yes, the 2014 Honda Civic is a reliable car. Honda Civics, in general, set the standard for reliable, compact vehicles. In addition, Consumer Reports gives the 2014 Civic its highest overall reliability rating. U.S. News gave the used compact car a similarly high-reliability rating.

According to CarComplaints, the most common problems reported by 2014 Honda Civic owners include interior accessories problems. Leading those complaints are reports involving uncomfortable seats and a few complaints about the vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

U.S. News says, “a used 2014 Civic is a fun-to-drive and reliable small car that costs a lot less money than the new model,” with used prices ranging from $10,500 to almost $18,000.
