Is the 2015 Toyota Tundra a good truck?

The 2015 Toyota Tundra has always been a popular truck. Toyota is known for building reliable trucks and cars. For the 2015 year, U.S. News placed the Tundra at number five on the list of best full-size pickup trucks. Which trucks came in ahead of it?

The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and the Ram 1500. Compared to some of the other options available, the Tundra fell short in a few places. Some of the positives included two V8 options and a TRD off-road package.

The 2015 Toyota Tundra ranks poorly among full-size pickup trucks because it can’t match most rivals’ overall performance or work capabilities. It also has a lower-than-average safety score for the class.

Some of the not-so-great features include poor fuel economy, safety issues, a low towing capability, and below-average materials used in the cabin. The fuel economy was estimated to be around 13-15 in the city and 17-19 on the highway.

Kelley Blue Book also rated the 2015 Tundra a bit below average. The truck received a 3.9 from experts and a 4.5 from consumers. KBB noted that the Tundra was designed and built in America, which is definitely a plus for some potential buyers.

Some of the negatives were similar to U.S. News. Poor fuel economy and overall heavy weight make this truck less economical than some others in its class.

What problems do Toyota Tundras have?

The 2015 Tundra has three open recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is less than usual for a truck of that age. One of the recalls relates to faulty lugnuts on 20-inch Rockstar wheels installed by Southeast Toyota or a Southeast Toyota dealer. These can be replaced at the dealership.

The next is about the Load Carrying Capacity Modification Label having the accessories’ incorrect weight. Toyota provided a new label.

The final recall is about vehicles with Nitto Terra Grappler G2 275/60R20 116S XL tires installed with an incorrect inflation sticker. This only applied to 144 vehicles and was remedied with a proper inflation sticker.

The overall safety rating was at a four out of five stars for crash testing.

J.D. Power gave the Tundra an 83 out of 100. Citing an average driving experience. However, the resale value received a 97 out of 100. The trucks held value well even after a few years of driving.

Is this the pickup truck for you?

There are many pickup trucks available in various trims and styles. If you drive and tow a lot, the 2015 Ford F-150 might be a better pick overall. If you don’t plan on towing much, the Tundra is a solid choice.

The Toyota Tundra has improved over the years, so perhaps the 2015 model isn’t right for you. The 2016 Toyota models and beyond are always a reliable choice.
