Hyundai is building a reputation as an automaker that makes a lot of great cars. This is the case with the 2016 Hyundai Sonata, as Hyundai gave the car a lot of updates for that model year, and that made the car nearly flawless. Here’s a look at how the 2016 Hyundai Sonata got almost everything right according to U.S. News. 

Hyundai gave the Sonata several updates for the 2016 model year

Hyundai redesigned the Sonata for the 2015 model year, but that didn’t stop the South Korean auto giant from giving the car more updates. According to U.S. News, the 2016 Sonata received upgrades mostly in terms of its infotainment system and safety system. One of the biggest upgrades happened to the car’s infotainment system, as the prior model year did not come with a touchscreen display as standard.

For the 2016 model year though, Hyundai gave the Sonata a 7-inch touchscreen. While that’s smaller than many touchscreens on new cars today, a 7-inch touchscreen is big enough for most drivers.

On top of that, Hyundai gave the sedan Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as standard. These features are common today, but they were rarer back then, so this was a great upgrade for the time.

The last major upgrade that Hyundai gave the Sonata was to its safety system. The Sonata came with forward collision warning, and for the 2016 model year, the South Korean automaker upgraded the car’s forward collision warning by giving it brake assist. 

How the 2016 Hyundai Sonata is almost flawless

Those upgrades were part of the reason why U.S. News wrote that the Sonata, “is one of the few midsize cars that get nearly everything right.” The Sonata started with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that got 185 hp, and it provides a decent amount of acceleration for a base engine.

Hyundai also gave drivers some engine options, including a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that got 245 hp. That turbo 2.0-liter is powerful enough to compete with V6 engines on other cars.

The base engine is very efficient though, as it gets 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on highways, for 33 mpg combined. Not only does the Hyundai drive well, but its interior is also great, especially thanks to the upgrades it received in the 2016 model year. In fact, the Sonata’s interior “outclasses most rivals” thanks to the premium materials that Hyundai used.

The Sonata’s cabin seats five and it’s spacious and comfortable to be in. Plus, the infotainment system is easy-to-use. Furthermore, the Sonata’s trunk has a capacity of 16.3 cu. ft., which is above average for the midsize sedan segment.

That being said, the Hyundai’s trunk is its only flaw. While the trunk has a lot of room, its opening is narrow, which may make it tricky to actually put cargo into the trunk.

A used 2016 Hyundai Sonata can be a good option

Overall, the 2016 Sonata, just like many of its other model years, provide drivers with a lot of value for the price. When the 2016 Sonata was brand-new, Hyundai was selling the car at a starting price tag of about $22,000. The most expensive options, however, could cost upwards of $34,000.

As of the time of writing, a used 2016 Sonata is much cheaper than that, but it won’t be too cheap either. According to U.S. News, it’ll start at around $16,000, and some shoppers may pay around $23,000 for their used 2016 Sonata.
