CX-5 vs. Tucson: Reliability scores

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 has an impressive reliability score of 83/100 from J.D. Power. However, owners complain that the vehicle’s acceleration and navigation system aren’t up to par.

The 2018 Hyundai Tucson also has a “great” reliability score of 85/100. But owners dislike the vehicle’s maneuverability and navigation system.

Some owners of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the 2018 Hyundai Tucson have reported engine issues.

According to CarComplaints.com, two drivers reported the engine head was defective, and it has a severity rating of 10 out of 10, or “really awful.” It happens around 23,450 miles, and the engine had to be replaced. Eighteen people reported problems with the engine, eight complained of windshield issues, and five griped about brake trouble.

Even though 2018 Mazda CX-5 owners have reported more severe problems, more drivers have complained about the 2018 Hyundai Tucson to CarComplaints.com. The worst issue is no warning for low oil. It has a severity rating of 8.5 out of 10, or “pretty bad.” In total, 25 owners reported problems with the Tucson’s engine. Another 20 had issues with the transmission, and four had electrical and fuel system problems. 

Which used compact SUV is superior?

You should consider other factors, such as that Hyundai offers a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, while Mazda provides only three-year/36,000-mile coverage. Because of that, you’re more likely to find a Tucson that has had all the required maintenance. In addition, the 2018 Tucson has a low starting price and a slightly higher reliability score. It also provides more cargo space.

On the other hand, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 has fewer reported problems, and Mazda is known for its reliability. Plus, the CX-5 boasts fun handling and an upscale interior. So the price difference isn’t significant enough to pass up the CX-5 for the Tucson, especially if you’re interested in a higher trim level.
