Volkswagen is synonymous with trendy little cars and sedans with a lot of character. However, Volkswagen now builds large SUVs, pickup trucks, as well as electric vehicles. Despite the updated business model, the German automaker has always focused on hatchbacks and sedans like the venerable Jetta. For used car shoppers, a 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is an excellent prospect. So why is the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta one of the best used cars you can buy?

Simply put, yes, the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is a good car. The Jetta features a stylish exterior with a spacious cabin and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Edmunds compares that exterior styling and modern cabin to more expensive rivals, which suggests that the Jetta is a great deal.

Also, the Volkswagen sedan is standard with a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with good fuel economy and usable mid-range torque. Consumer Reports (CR) says that shoppers could also find the Jetta with a 1.8L turbocharged engine, which owners touted for its good passing power. Furthermore, buyers with the need for speed can get a 2018 GLI with a compliant DSG automatic transmission

Although CR doesn’t have exact metrics for long-term reliability, some owner satisfaction rating issues exist. Specifically, the owner satisfaction score was a two out of five, suggesting that many 2018 model owners were displeased with the sedan for one reason or another.

Other than owner satisfaction, there are three recalls for the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta. First, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that fuel system issues increase fire risk. Next, there is a brake recall for the Jetta, which may increase the likelihood of a crash. Finally, an electrical steering system fault could allow the vehicle to roll away if the key isn’t present and the car isn’t in park.

How many miles per gallon does a 2018 Volkswagen Jetta get?

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta gets high marks for fuel economy. The smaller 1.4L turbocharged Jetta accomplished a commendable 47 mpg at highway speeds and 32 mpg overall. Further, the larger 1.8T engine still manages 30 mpg.

How much is a 2018 Volkswagen Jetta?

Edmunds says that the 2018 model brings a lot of value to the table, with an average list price of just $17,233. Considering you get admirable fuel economy, a generous cabin, and contemporary styling for that money, it seems like a bargain. Further, CR suggests that shrewd shoppers could land a 2018 Volkswagen Jetta for as little as $16,925.

Should you buy it?

It is challenging to overlook recalls and owner satisfaction ratings. However, Edmunds recommends the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta as one of the best used cars to buy as of 2021. While Consumer Reports doesn’t outright recommend it, they celebrate the little car for its styling, engines, and space.

If you’re not sold on the Jetta, CR recommends the 2018 Mazda3 and the 2018 Toyota Corolla. Also, Edmunds says that the Corolla joins the Jetta on the list of the best used cars. However, if you want a stylish little European sedan with space to spare, consider the Volkswagen Jetta. Scroll down to the following article to read about five of the best used sedans to buy.
