Over 60,000 Ram and Jeep vehicles powered by the EcoDiesel 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine have been recalled. The issue is a faulty high-pressure fuel pump that can fail without warning. If this happens the Ram or Jeep will stall out from lack of fuel. 

Which Ram and Jeep EcoDiesel vehicles are in the recall?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall covers the 2020 to 2022 Jeep Wrangler, 2021 to 2022 Gladiator, and 2020 to 2022 Ram 1500 pickup. According to Consumer Reports, there are over 60,000 vehicles involved. Over half are Ram 1500 trucks. Over 21,000 Wranglers and 7,375 Gladiators round out the affected diesel recalls. 

Bosch fuel pumps are, again, the culprit. The problems with the Bosch fuel pumps go back a decade. When scouring Ram and Jeep forums, it becomes a common complaint. Stellantis finally issued a recall in June this year, covering 2013 to 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram Classic pickups.  

What causes the Ram and Jeep EcoDiesel fuel pumps to fail?

Metal fragments are expelled from the pump, getting into the entire fuel system, including the injectors. This caused the failures. But even before this earlier recall, there were complaints about air getting into the fuel system. 

When that occurs, it can also kill the pump causing fuel starvation. That’s because there is metal-to-metal contact inside the pump, causing metal fragments to travel in the fuel system. Many of the Bosch CP4 and CP4.2 fuel pumps are replaced with Bosch CP3 pumps. 

Though producing less fuel pressure, the CP3 pumps seem to lessen the problems of the EcoDiesel CP4 pumps. Some suggest using various diesel fuel treatments after each or every other fill-up will lessen the chances of failures occurring.  

How can you tell if the problem is occurring?

Fuel leaks or excessive noise are some ways of detecting the issue. Sometimes a warning light indicates fuel pump issues. Fuel pumps will be replaced, as will all other damaged fuel system components. Jeep and Ram warranties cover all of these fixes. 

The recalled vehicles won’t begin to launch until early in 2023. Owners will begin to see recall notices in the first part of December 2022. Through September Stellantis says only 205 warranty claims were recorded. It is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the problem. 

A partial 3.0-liter EcoDiesel recall was issued back in 2019. The issue at that time was problems with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR cooler. The EGR cooler lowers heat and pressure by reducing nitrogen oxide emissions. There is even a pending class-action lawsuit over the issue.

This lawsuit was filed in 2020. Since then there have been numerous motions and discoveries postponing a trial. The trial has been scheduled for the end of 2023.
