The Audi Q7 went through a mid-cycle refresh for the 2020 model year, which includes updated front and rear fascias and an interior update that follows suit with the existing Audi Q8. While this news is great for any prospective Q7 buyers, and sad news for anyone that bought a 2019 Audi Q7, the more exciting information that Audi just released is the addition of the SQ7 to the model line.

Just like all the other “S” model variants in the Audi line up, the Audi SQ7 is the sporty version of the brand’s three-row people hauler, which will be faster than its Q7 counterpart, giving speed enthusiast a much-needed hit.  

What’s so great about the Audi SQ7?

It’s no surprise that Americans love their SUVs as large cargo capacity and room for seven is what most American families want and need, but more power is always nice. The 2020 Audi SQ7 fulfills this need with 500 horsepower on tap from a new twin-turbo V8 engine, making it a formidable competitor to the Mercedes AMG GLE Class and the BMW X5 M. Why are SUVs like this so special? Because there’s nothing like carrying your whole family and all their gear in an SUV that has more power than a first-generation Audi R8. It’s not necessary, but it’s great to have.

New engine, better performance

Under the hood of the new Audi SQ7 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that puts out 500 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping score, this is the same powerplant found in the new Audi S8 and also the Audi SQ8, although it’s tuned with a different engine calibration, hence the difference in horsepower ratings. The V8 engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive is standard. With this powertrain combination, Audi says that the Sq7 will reach 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and get on up to a top speed of 155 mph. Not bad for an SUV that weighs over 4,700 pounds.

How else is it different than the Audi Q7?

The Audi SQ7 looks a little different than the Q7 thanks to its S model front and rear bumpers with an integrated front splitter, a new Singleframe grille, and Alu-optic side mirror caps. Out back, the SQ7 has quad tailpipes and rear diffuser, while larger 21-inch bi-color wheels wrapped in summer performance tires fill the wheel wells.

On the inside, the SQ7 will be adorned with “S” badging on the 3-spoke sport steering wheel and illuminated side sills, while the diamond cross-stitched leather front seats are ready to hold occupants tight during hard cornering. Speaking of hard cornering, SQ7 buyers can opt for a Sport Package, which includes Audi’s Active roll stabilization, a sport differential, and red brake calipers.  

How much will it cost?

 The 2020 Audi SQ7 will be available in two different trim levels: Premium Plus and Prestige. The Premium Plus model has an MSRP of $84,800, while the higher-trim Prestige will be priced at $90,400. In case you’re wondering, checking the box for the Prestige model will net you an upgraded Bang and Olufsen 3D premium surround sound system with 19 speakers, a full-color heads-up display, a top-view camera system, and a driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control and Intersection assist.

There’s no official date on when the Audi SQ7 will be available at dealerships, however, we can expect sometime in the Spring of this year.
