Recently, Honda announced the first-ever CR-V Hybrid for the United States. This 2020 vehicle aims to please with snazzy features, relative affordability, and fuel efficiency. For Honda, it’s not just about making a decent hybrid crossover, but making the CR-V Hybrid the best CR-V to date. The Japanese manufacturer’s goal is to make two-thirds of its global lineup electric by 2030. 

What Makes the Honda CR-V Hybrid Special? 

The CR-V Hybrid’s exterior is sleek yet rugged. The hybrid model has a powertrain system that almost seamlessly transitions from its electric motor to its 2.0-liter VTEC engine. The electric motor is directly sourced through reduction gearing instead of over transmission. It has a total of 212 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. 

The CR-V Hybrid’s EPA fuel-efficiency rankings reach 40 mpg city and 35 mpg highway compared to 41 mpg and 38 highway for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. From a complete stop, it will take you nearly 10 seconds to reach 60 mph. The CR-V Hybrid comes in four available trims: Hybrid LX, Hybrid EX, Hybrid EX-L, and the Hybrid Touring.

Hybrid LX 

The Hybrid LX comes standard with Honda Sensing, a suite of safety features that includes the collision braking mitigation system to help prevent accidents, a road departure system that adjusts as you change lanes, a traffic sign recognition system and even more.

Other standard features include real-time all-wheel-drive, power flow monitor, smart entry with a walk away auto lock, push-button start, and automatic climate control. As far as audio capabilities go, the sound system in the LX comes with four speakers and there is Bluetooth functionality and basic USB port access. The base price for this model is $27,750.

Hybrid EX 

A step up from the LX, the Hybrid EX has more cabin interior features and tech functionality starting at $30,260. There’s a blind spot information system with a cross-traffic monitor, security system and rear privacy glass. The EX model has other things we’ve come to expect like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

There’s also a SiriusXM Radio option and the audio system comes with six speakers. The EX has a seven-inch touch screen and other treats like heated front seats and a nice one-touch power moon-roof.

Hybrid EX-L and Hybrid Touring 

Toward the top of the line, the Hybrid EX-L has additional amenities like a leather-trimmed interior, heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting. These features along with an eight-speaker audio system and memory driver’s seat have a price tag of $32,750. The fully loaded Hybrid Touring model will cost you $35,950 and comes with additional trimmings including 19-inch alloy wheels, parking sensors, and a wireless phone charger.

The Final Verdict 

The CR-V Hybrid is a viable sustainable, safe option with an inviting car cabin and plenty of cargo space. As a Honda model, the reliability and affordability aspects are there along with the fuel efficiency we have become accustomed to. It’s a great option for families or for those who are looking for a sporty ride with more toting space.

Still, while the CR-V Hybrid is an affordable option, the vehicle is not a true deal. Like other models in the family, Honda charges top dollar for its premium amenities and doesn’t give much at a bargain.
