Station wagons have been a dying breed in America. Over the past couple of decades, consumers have been gravitating more toward sedans and SUVs, ignoring the inherent practicality that a wagon has to offer in terms of cargo and passenger room.

But with the forthcoming 2021 Audi RS6 Avant, which has more power that most heavy-duty trucks, aggressive styling, and enough room for the whole family, we’re pretty sure that American consumers will finally take notice.

Here’s what we know about the RS6 Avant so far

The 2021 Audi RS6 Avant is not out yet, but you can sign up for updates in the meantime. However, we do know that the heart of the car is the main highlight and what everyone has been raving about in the past year, so we’ll start there. The RS6 will come with one engine choice: a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.

The powerplant is combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, mainly for quicker acceleration, and is mated to a new ZF 8-speed transmission that takes care of the lightning-fast gear shifts. As you could probably guess, Audi’s quattro system is standard and puts the power down through the massive 22-inch wheels and sticky Pirelli rubber.

This mean combination is good for 0-60 times in about 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. If you opt for the Dynamic Package, the top speed raises up to 190 mph.

It’s heavy, but it sticks

Take one look at the body of this car and you can probably guess that it can tip the scales very easily. It is quite porky, weighing in at about 4,600 pounds, but the power more than makes up for it. With all this weight and power, Audi engineers had to come with a way to make sure the RS6 sticks in the corners.

In addition to the sticky performance tires and wide wheels, the RS5 Avant benefits from a choice of two different suspensions. The standard setup consists of an adaptive air suspension with adjustable settings. While a “dynamic” suspension that uses a more traditional coil spring and adaptive damper setup is optional.

Rear-wheel steering is also on the option list, which should help this super station wagon turn on a dime.

The inside is just as nice

The interior of the Audi RS6 Avant will be on par with all of the other current Audi models. A dual-touchscreen display takes center stage in the middle of the sleek dashboard. Interior materials consist of leather and faux suede as well as premium tech features like a head-up display and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel.

Behind the rear seats, Audi says that there is 20 cubic-feet of cargo room and up to 59 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. After, practicality is still part of the main focus of this car.

When can we expect it?

In true Audi fashion, we expect that the RS6 Avant will be showing up a little late to the party, considering we expected to be out already. For now, though, we can speculate that it should show up around Springtime of this year.
