Over the last few years, we have seen several car companies increase their efforts towards making the shift to electric vehicles, and General Motors is not being left behind. The car company already has the BEV3 architecture, which is set to feature first in Cadillac’s crossover. Steve Carlisle, Cadillac’s chief executive further added that the three-row-seat car will be the height of luxury and innovation.

When it comes to the Cadillac Escalade, reports indicate that the car company will release the fifth-generation car with three different powertrain options. Likely, that means multiple V8s and potentially a hybrid.

Now reports are stating that the other powertrain will be a fully electric option. With General Motors announcing recently that it is developing a fully electric truck, there could be some truth behind a fully electric Escalade as well.

Electric Escalade?

The upcoming 2021 Cadillac Escalade is set to be a fully electric vehicle and will be offering an impressive range of 400 miles on a single charge. The news reported by Cadillac Society who spoke to sources with knowledge on Cadillac’s future product plans.

According to the report, the electric Cadillac will, however, not launch at the same time as the new fifth-gen model which is expected to either launch later this year or earlier the following year. While the fifth-generation model is set to debut in 2021, the electric is set to make its appearance later in the fifth-generation model’s lifecycle.

The news has gone down well among Cadillac fans, several of them excited at the brand’s shift to becoming the flag bearer of its parent company’s tech and EV efforts. The electric Escalade would also allow Cadillac to provide competition for Tesla’s Model X.

If the Escalade’s 400 miles are accurate, it would have Tesla’s range beat. Currently, the California based brand’s top-trim Model X SUV offers ranges of up to 325 miles on a single charge according to EPA, while the Model S tops out at 370 miles. Since this is already more range than any other SUV offers, the stated 400 miles would put the Escalade miles ahead of even the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi E-Tron, and Mercedes EQC.

However, there is still a chance that Tesla’s Model X could have undergone a few range upgrades by the time the electric Cadillac Escalade makes an appearance though this is unlikely.

Another element set to make the field more competitive for Tesla and other brands is the semi-autonomous hands-free driver-assist featured in the Cadillac. Also, the lack of an internal combustion, the electric Cadillac Escalade would offer a quieter ride with the electric vehicle expected to offer reduced NVH levels as compared to those found in the gas-only models.

But maybe not

There might be a few stumbling blocks, however. One such obstacle would be the vehicle’s pricing. With the outgoing model’s retail price starting from $75,195, without destination charges, and the Model X starting at $84,990, it would be no surprise to see the Cadillac exceeding a retail price of $100,000.

General Motors had previously promised up to twenty electric models by 2023 so a fully electric Cadillac Escalade would fit in with those plans. The car company is, however, not known for talking about future products that might or might not come to fruition.

With the reported time of release not close, we might have to contend with rumors and speculations, at least until the automaker comes out and makes the rumors official. In spite of the limited information from General Motors, we can’t wait for the quiet, luxurious experience that a fully electric Cadillac Escalade would provide.
