Now, Dodge has said it’s going to be bringing back the Hellcat for the 2023 Durango, and 2021 Durango Hellcat owners are pretty upset. In fact, some are talking about suing Dodge. Here’s what the fuss is all about.

The Dodge Durango Hellcat was discontinued – until it wasn’t

The 2021 Dodge Durango was supposed to be the last Durango with a Hellcat engine. It was this fact that drove people to pay big bucks for the 2021 model. Yet now Dodge says it’s bringing back the Durango Hellcat for the 2023 model. And current Durango Hellcat owners aren’t happy about it, according to The Drive.

One Durango Hellcat owner plans on suing Dodge. His name is Stacy, and he doesn’t want to use his last name to retain his anonymity. He told The Drive that he only paid the huge price tag of the 2021 Durango Hellcat because “of the exclusivity, potential collectibility, and that this will be our only chance to have one custom made with all the options we wanted.” So what does Stacy want? For Dodge to not make any more Durango Hellcats.

The Durango Hellcat has an incredibly powerful engine

The Dodge Durango Hellcat is insanely popular because it’s the most powerful SUV out there. It has a 6.2-liter V8 engine that makes 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. It’s also the SUV that can tow the most, with a capability of up to 8,700 pounds.

Because it’s the only SUV with such an impressive engine and towing capability, it’s a highly desirable SUV. Yet it’s expensive, so it’s possible that Dodge marketed its availability in a way to make it even more appealing. Stacy says that Dodge probably never intended to keep the production of the Durango Hellcat so low, and only wanted to manufacture a “sense of urgency and the idea of exclusivity.”

There were only supposed to be 2,000 Durango Hellcats made

When Dodge first announced that it was bringing back the Durango Hellcat for a one-year run, it said that it was only going to produce 2,000 units. Yet that number ended up becoming 3,000. If you bought the Durango Hellcat due to its extremely limited number of sport utility vehicles initially being made, then the fact that Dodge increased that by 50% was probably pretty disappointing.

The first 2,000 Dodge Durango Hellcats sold out fairly quickly. This was followed by Dodge deciding to sell another 1,000 units. That upset Durango Hellcat owners that bought the first 2,000 Durangos. After all, they’d been led to believe that there would only be so many Hellcats available.

How much was the 2021 Dodge Hellcat?

If you bought the first batch of the 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat, you probably paid a pretty penny. The cost of the Durango Hellcat was $82,490. That’s an incredible amount for an SUV that you could get brand new in 2022 for just $37,760. Of course, that Durango doesn’t come with a Hellcat engine.

Is there any chance that people who bought the 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat could get some money back? It’s a possibility, though there’s no clear sense right now as to how far a lawsuit could get.
