According to Ford’s latest sales figures, the electric crossover outsold the muscle car by a small margin. However, it is worth pointing out that the internal-combustion version experienced a major sales dip compared to the same time last year.

Before we dive in, however, it is worth mentioning that these figures are severely affected by the ongoing microchip shortage, so chances are they’ll be significantly higher next year. Regardless, the electric crossover managed to sell 2,465 units during June. In total, Ford claims it has sold 12,975 Mach-E’s this year, a great effort considering this crossover isn’t easy to get.

In contrast, the Mustang muscle car sold a total of 2,240 units during the same time. If this seems like an unusually slim margin, that’s because it is. According to Ford’s sales report, the Mustang managed to sell 4,522 units during the same time last year, despite a global pandemic. If we had to guess, this is likely a result of that aforementioned microchip shortage. As a result, these numbers could rise again toward the end of the year.

Sales for the muscle car are still holding strong

Regardless of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s success, sales for the muscle car remain quite strong. While there was a 50.5 percent dip in sales for June, the muscle car is doing well overall for the year. That’s because, in total, 31,950 of these muscle cars found new homes so far this year, marking only a 5.4 percent decrease when compared to the same time last year.

Overall, sales for the muscle car have seen a steady decline since 2015. According to CarSalesBase, 122,439 units sold in 2015, compared to just 61,090 units in 2020. As a result, it seems the American carmaker may have to spice up its iconic muscle car to boost sales moving forward.

Since the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is most likely the one you’ll actually end up buying if you have a family, let’s look at how much it costs. If you want the cheapest model, the Select, you’ll pay a base price of $42,895. Moving up from there is the Premium which will cost you $47,600. The top trim level is the GT which hasn’t debuted officially yet and should cost $59,900 when it arrives.
