2021 Genesis G70 Models Are Already Being Recalled
It’s never great when a car has a recall, and it’s definitely not great when the recall happens soon after the car is released. Unfortunately, that’s what just happened with the 2021 Genesis G70, which already has a recall on its fuel pump jet nozzles. We’re not even in 2021 yet and here we are. Here’s a look at what we know.
The fuel pump jet nozzle recall on the 2021 Genesis G70
According to Car Complaints, a problem during the manufacturing process may have left plastic burrs in the low-pressure fuel pump jet nozzles installed in the 2021 model year Genesis G70 cars that have the 2.0-liter Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine. That’s only one of the two engine options. The plastic burrs could block the fuel pump jet nozzles, preventing the fuel supply from reaching the engines and causing the engine to stall. If the plastic burrs did cause an engine to stall, there could be an increased risk of a crash, especially if the car was driving at a high speed.
The cars were all built between March 31, 2020, and July 20, 2020, for sale in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 319 vehicles are affected by the recall.
Owners will be able to have the 2021 Genesis G70 with the 2.0-liter engine repaired at the dealership. The recall begins on November 13, 2020, and dealers will inspect and repair the fuel pump assembly jet nozzles for free at that time. Hyundai will also reimburse owners for repairs as well. Owners with any questions should call Hyundai, Genesis’ parent company, at 855-371-9460. Refer to the manufacturer’s recall number of 005G when making the call.
How the problem was discovered
The issue was discovered after a fuel pump assembly was returned to Hyundai under a warranty claim. Hyundai and the supplier investigated the problem during August and early September.
The investigation discovered that a problem with the injection molding process caused the plastic burrs on a production lot worth of fuel pump jet nozzles. It also uncovered the potential for clogging and stalling. Hyundai will notify owners in November about the recall and the offer for repairs.
The 2021 Genesis G70
Although it has one recall, the new 2021 Genesis G70 received a positive review from Car and Driver. It’s a luxury sport sedan at an affordable price. It has great handling and a luxury interior that stands up against its more expensive rivals. On the downside, its infotainment system isn’t super up to date, and its rear seat is a little small.
The engine with the recall is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, generating 252 hp when equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission. It produces 255 hp with a manual transmission. The more powerful option is a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine, generating 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.
The interior has high-quality materials for an opulent feel that Car and Driver found “more luxurious than the Alfa Romeo Giulia or Jaguar XE.” The 2021 model year now comes with more standard features, including adaptive headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, plus a wireless charging pad.
Buyers looking for more luxury features can choose the Prestige package, which offers a microsuede headliner, Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a head-up display, plus a 360-degree camera and a power trunk lid.
The 2021 G70 comes with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. These driver-assist features are all standard.
The 2021 Genesis G70 delivers as a luxury sedan, but owners should be aware of the new recall since it could make their vehicle a hazard to drive.
