2021 Honda Civic Type R Sells for $102,000: Who Needs Money Anyways?
Article Highlights:
- A 2021 Honda Civic Type R sells for ridiculous money on Bring a Trailer
- The Type R Limited Edition is not worth six figures
- Collectibles like this are worth it, if you have the money
A $102,000 Honda is an insane concept. Usually, the only Honda models that are worth this kind of money are the boilerplate halo cars, like the Honda NSX Type R. However when the company says they’re only going to make 600 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition models, you can bet your bottom (or top) dollar that the first of those is going to be worth some money to someone.
This 2021 Honda Civic Type R is absurdly overpriced
But come on. $102,000?? It sounds absurd. Originally, any one of the 600 Civic Type R LE’s (Limited Edition) was supposed to retail for right around $44,000. The Bring a Trailer car’s window sticker reads an MSRP of $44,990 to be exact. Honestly, that’s an awful lot of money for a hot hatchback, even at MSRP. The only hot hatch that retails for more is the Volkswagen Golf R. This one sold for more than double that because of one thing: the plaque next to the gear lever that reads “1 of 600.”
The 2021 Honda Civic Type R is one of the greatest hot hatchbacks of all time, and the LE package makes it even hotter with stiffer dampers, less weight, and special BBS wheels. There’s also a heck of a story behind this one. Originally, Honda gave this car to Omaze to give away, which the company promptly did. Then, the owner listed the vehicle with only 16 miles on it through Bring a Trailer. In short, it was a surefire way to make some serious cash.
Is the 2021 Type R worth it?
But is this 2021 Honda Civic Type R worth its $102,000 winning bid? Well, it’s likely a solid investment. The new owner probably intends to treat this car as such, especially given its low mileage. As we said before, the price of this car is all about the collectibility. While it is somewhat of a risky bet, odds are people will see the first Civic Type R on U.S shores as an icon, and the new owner is betting on that. The car will continue to appreciate in value, and we’re willing to bet it’ll be right back on BAT in several years.
So, this particular Type R is in some ways, worth $102,000. But what about, say, the #2 of 600 Civic Type R LE? Not so much. As fantastic as the Type R is, these cars are by no means a six-figure driving experience. That kind of money buys you some serious metal. We’re deep into used Porsche 911 territory.
You can’t depreciate a Civic Type R
That said, the 2021 Honda Civic Type R is on most levels, a solid buy. Current values are almost identical to the car’s original MSRP, and LE models consistently trade hands for tens of thousands more. You practically can’t depreciate a Civic Type R. The seller certainly made the right move selling off his 1 of 600 Type R LE, now let’s hope the money goes to something even more special.
