When it comes to fuel efficiency and safety, what vehicle stands out? There are a few that could claim they have both, but the one that stands out the most this year is the Honda Insight. Sure it has above-average EPA ratings, but what’s so appealing about this model is its safety standing.

MotorTrend has a list of the safest cars for 2021. The Honda Insight is one of them. What makes it so safe and what else does it have to offer?

What makes the Honda Insight so safe?

The first point indicating safety with the Honda Insight is that this sedan is based on the 2021 model of the Honda Civic, which is also considered to be a safe vehicle. Both models received above-average scores when it came to crash testing.

The NHTSA gave it a five-star rating for frontal crash, including both driver and passenger side tests. It also scored high with the side crash tests, which includes both the front and rear passenger seats. The last area tested was the rollover, which garnered it another five stars.

The IIHS also gave it perfect scores on all six areas they tested. It rated high with headlight performance and got superior grades for front crash prevention as well as child seat anchors. In 2020, the Honda Civic received a Top Safety Pick award, while the Honda Insight got a Top Safety Pick+.

What does the Honda Sensing safety system offer?

The Honda Insight offers the standard Honda Sensing system of safety features that include automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. It also comes with adaptive cruise control, which helps keep you a safe distance apart from the vehicle in front of you without you needing to do much.

Honda’s Insight comes with the lane-keeping system as well. This is designed to detect lane lines and will keep you centered between them by adjusting the steering wheel as needed. Along with that, you’ll also get a lane departure warning, which will alert you if it determines that you’re drifting over the lines. There’s also the collision mitigation braking system that will apply the brakes if it detects a possible collision up ahead.

The Honda Sensing package also offers a traffic sign recognition system and road departure mitigation system. There are much more safety features as well. You can get a multi-angle rearview camera, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, tire pressure monitoring, and vehicle stability assist that comes with traction control.

What trim levels does the Honda Insight have?

According to Honda’s website, the Honda Insight comes with three trims, the LX, EX, and Touring. All three models come with an Inline four-cylinder engine that produces 151 hp total between the gas engine and the permanent-magnetic electric motor. It’s also paired with an electronic continuously variable transmission on all models as well.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Insight delivers and then some. On city roads, you can expect 55 mpg. When you travel onto the highway, you can get up to 49 mpg. However, the Touring model only gets 51 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.

All three trims offer some of your basic standard equipment including power door locks and windows, sliding sun visors, electronic remote trunk release, and cargo area lighting. The LX and EX come with cloth seating, while the Touring offers leather and heated front seats. Both also come with automatic climate control, while the Touring offers the dual-zone version.

The Touring offers a power moonroof that activates at a touch of a button. You can easily let in a little fresh air or natural light whenever you need it. You’ll also get the Homelink remote system, which lets you access your home’s security system or open and close your garage door.

Honda’s newest model of the Insight is an impressive Hybrid that offers plenty of safety features. With excellent crash testing scores to go along with them, what more could you really ask for in a safe vehicle.
