You have many options for a small SUV with two rows, but not as midsize options. So, if you want extra capabilities but not as many seats, the Ford Edge is a popular choice. The new Honda Passport is also a highly-rated model. Which would you say is better?

The 2021 Honda Passport can handle more heavy-duty activities than the 2021 Ford Edge

The Passport and the Edge are obvious rivals, given their size. Both SUVs are relatively quick off the line and have decent fuel economy ratings. Still, there are a few differences regarding how these SUVs perform. 

The Passport’s sole engine is a 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6 linked to a nine-speed automatic. This V6 never feels underpowered and makes for an engaging driving experience. The Passport is also a good choice if you plan on hauling heavier cargo. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds. 

And as Car and Driver highlights, the Passport can venture off-road, but it will be an extra rough ride when it does. Some critics also note that Passport can feel clumsy and hefty. Despite these criticisms, it’s a comfortable and secure ride overall. 

You might favor the Edge more because of its agile handling. This Ford comes with a 250-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and an eight-speed auto. If you’re interested in more speed, there’s the Edge ST trim, which has a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 that makes 335-hp. But even with the more powerful engine, the Edge can only haul up to 3,500 pounds. 

The Edge has a plusher interior 

Both the Passport and the Edge have room to seat up to five people comfortably. The Passport has more interior space, though. If you fold the rear seats down, the Passport has over 100 cubic feet of cargo room, and it also has a floor-panel compartment. 

The Edge doesn’t have a “secret” storage compartment, and it only has 73.4 cubic feet of total cargo room. On the other hand, the Edge’s interior is arguably more modern than the Passport’s. Critics also recognize the Edge for its plush seating, whereas the Passport’s seats might be too firm for some folks. 

You could also say the Edge has the advantage regarding in-car tech. The 2021 Edge has Ford’s newest infotainment system that includes a 12-inch touchscreen, which is the largest in the segment. It also comes with 4G wifi capability plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

The 2021 Passport is also standard with these smartphone apps. However, the Passport’s 8-inch touchscreen isn’t as user-friendly as what Ford offers. Regarding advanced safety, these SUVs also have a few things in common. Both come with gadgets, including a forward-collision warning and a lane-keeping function. 

Should you get the Passport or the Edge?

The 2021 Honda Passport begins at $32,790, and the 2021 Ford Edge starts at $31,250. We’d say that the Passport is the more well-rounded choice, given its performance capabilities and versatile interior. But if you don’t need as much utility, the Edge is a solid buy.
