Range has continued to increase for electric cars. The 2021 Tesla Model S is one of the leaders, with a range of 402 miles before it needs to be charged again. The Model S Plaid+ will soon offer a range of more than 500 miles. The less expensive Tesla Model 3 has a range of up to 353 miles. Buyers who need this level of range probably aren’t interested in the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric. The Ioniq has a lot to offer to buyers aside from range though. We take a look.

The small range of the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

While the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric is efficient, it doesn’t have a very extensive range. The five-door hatchback has a maximum range of just 170 miles before it needs to be charged, says U.S. News. That was recently increased since previous models had just 124 miles of range.

The current Ioniq Electric fully charges in about 5.8 hours when using a 240-volt outlet. Using a 100-kW DC Fast Charging outlet, it can charge up to 80 percent in 54 minutes. The Ioniq has less range than other electric vehicles, but it’s still useful as a daily driver. It can be recharged at home without any issue, and it provides a long list of standard features.

The many features of the 2021 model

The 2021 Ioniq Electric surrounds buyers with plenty of standard features. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, and its infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It has a six-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth, and a USB port. It also comes standard with proximity keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats, says U.S. News.

Its available tech features include a sizable 10.25-inch touchscreen plus satellite radio, a navigation system, and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system. Leather seats are also an available feature.

For advanced safety features, the Ioniq comes standard with automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention monitoring, and a rearview camera. Also available are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane follow assist, cyclist detection, highway drive assist, and front and rear parking sensors.

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric has a starting price of $33,245, and its low price is one of its great attributes. The Ioniq’s environmentally conscious nature extends to its interior materials, which are made from sugar cane and volcanic rock. U.S. News describes the steering as “light,” making it great for city driving. It did also say that “the ride feels jittery at higher speeds” though. It has a small rear seat but a large cargo area. The Ioniq Electric has 23 cubic feet of space. The Ioniq Hybrid has a bit more with 26.5 cubic feet.

The Ioniq has a “harsh ride” and gets “meager acceleration at higher speeds,” according to U.S. News. In addition to the fully electric Ioniq, the car is also available as a gas-powered hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. The Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid both have a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine plus an electric motor, which together generate 139 hp. They are paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The electric motor in the Ioniq Electric generates 134 hp and is paired with a single-speed transmission. None of the powertrains has a lot of quick acceleration, according to U.S. News.

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric may not be able to compete against a Tesla electric vehicle, but its low price and many standard features help make it a competitor against compact gas-powered cars. For driving around town, the low range won’t even be noticeable.
