The 2021 Hyundai Kona Is the Perfect Sedan Alternative
The 2021 Hyundai Kona came to me for testing recently. As a total package, it pretty much ticks all the boxes. For anyone shopping for something this size in the mainstream segment, Hyundai has given us the Kona. This subcompact crossover SUV is the perfect sedan alternative.
The Hyundai Kona comes with several powertrain options. It also has several trim levels that fit into an affordable price range. For anyone looking to step outside of the traditional sedan, the 2021 Hyundai Kona should be on their radar.
How big is the Hyundai Kona?
The 2021 Hyundai Kona is 13.7 feet long according to U.S. News and World Report. The Hyundai Sonata is 16.1 feet long and the Elantra is 15.4 feet long. Technically, the 2021 Hyundai Kona is regarded as a subcompact crossover SUV.
The 2021 Hyundai Kona manages to fit a lot of utility into its small package. It’s a great sedan alternative for those that prefer a crossover SUV. However, its compact size gives it an edge on larger and pricier competition.
Is it a reliable subcompact crossover SUV?
Consumer Reports ranks the 2021 Hyundai Kona five out of five for predicted reliability. J.D. Power also gives the Kona a rating of “great” for quality and reliability, giving is a score of 81/100 in the category. Often, one of the reasons buyers choose traditional sedan models like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry is for reliability.
Because this is a reliable subcompact crossover SUV, it makes a great sedan alternative. The EPA rating for the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder AWD powertrain––like the one found in my tester––is a combined 27 mpg. With a front-wheel drive option, drivers should see around 30 mpg. The 2021 Honda Accord is rated for a little more or a little less than the Kona in its various engine options.
Considering the size and similar EPA mpg ratings, the 2021 Hyundai Kona makes an obvious choice for those wanting a subcompact crossover SUV instead of a sedan. One notable disadvantage is that the Kona’s more compact dimensions will take a little bit of space away from the back seat and cargo. However, the 2021 Hyundai Kona still makes a good argument as a sedan alternative.
Is the Hyundai Kona a hybrid?
According to Driving Electric, there is a Hyundai Kona hybrid model in global markets. However, this powertrain option hasn’t made it to U.S. soil. So, while the 2021 Hyundai Kona Hybrid exists elsewhere it’s not an option for North American drivers.
However, Hyundai does offer the Hyundai Kona Electric. This model is fully electric. Hyundai USA may not offer a hybrid to U.S. buyers, but we do get the fully electric version. The Kona EV has an electric range up to 132 miles. It also start nearly $20 grand higher than the gasoline-powered Kona.
A good sedan alternative
If you want something with the more rugged style of a subcompact crossover SUV like the 2021 Hyundai Kona, this is a good sedan alternative. Although the rear seat room and cargo capacity are easily beat within its segment, the Kona still offers plenty of utility for drivers that want something other than the traditional passenger car. It boasts appealing style, a range of trim levels, and an affordable price range.
