The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dominates as the Best PHEV
The Jeep Wrangler did it again. As the longest-lasting nameplate in America, the Wrangler continues to be legendary. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV hasn’t been out for too long, but it’s already the best-selling option!
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the best PHEV
We thought the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV would take a little longer to rise in popularity, but it’s already proving to be one of the most popular options you can buy. Just in case anyone needs to be caught up to speed, a PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and the ‘4xe’ is pronounced four by E.
According to InsideEVs, the Wrangler 4xe is the most popular hybrid option so far in the second quarter of 2021. The Jeep brand recorded a 19 percent increase in total sales year-over-year and its second-best quarter for retail sales in the United States. The Wrangler and Gladiator both had their best quarters so far.
The Wrangler 4xe just launched in the fall, but it’s quickly raised to the top as the number one best-selling plug-in hybrid in the marketplace. About 69,020 Wrangler models sold, including at least 12,000 4xe models.
Why is the Wrangler 4xe so popular?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe attracts buyers because it serves as a highly capable off-roader with an improved fuel economy, especially while in EV mode for commuting. You can get started with a new Wrangler 4xe for about $49,805.
A 270-hp turbocharged inline-four engine is paired with a 44-hp motor in the front and a 134-hp motor in the back. They combine to create 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It’s the second most powerful Jeep available. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 takes the top spot with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
The Wrangler 4xe gets an EPA-estimated 49 MPGe and can travel for up to 21 miles on electric power only. The Wrangler 4xe comes with a Level I 120-volt charging cable that can charge the battery in about 12 hours at home.
With a Level 2 charger, the battery can be replenished in two hours. You can have a Level 2 charger professionally charged at home. Plus, Jeep installed charging stations at popular trailheads.
Being electric doesn’t stop the Wrangler 4xe from dominating the terrain. It has the same approach angle and locking differentials as the gas-powered rubicon. Plus, it can ford up to 30 inches of water.
How does the 4xe perform?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe has the power to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about six seconds. The brakes are consistent but take a little getting used to because the 4xe weighs 800 lbs more than gas-powered models. There is a little wind and road noise at higher speeds, but the engine is almost silent. Also, the extra weight helps dampen bumps, and the Max Regen mode helps the batteries gain extra juice.
There are three driving modes:
Hybrid: The computer uses senators to provide the perfect blend of power sources for maxim efficiency.
Electric: Only the primary motor moves the Jeep forward, and the engine stays off unless the driver quickly accelerates.
E-Save: The 4xe operates as a hybrid while monitoring its states of charge. You can also charge the battery in E-Save mode by using the gas engine.
The Wrangler 4xe is a popular PHEV option because you get an increased fuel economy without sacrificing power or comfort. We can’t wait for the Jeep Gladiator 4xe and Jeep Cherokee 4xe to debut soon.
