The 2021 Lamborghini Urus Might Actually Be a Great SUV

If the 2021 Lamborghini Urus doesn’t prove that every carmaker these days is trying to get an SUV out, I don’t know what does. The SUV market has gotten beyond saturated to the point where you can buy an SUV that can literally do anything. We’ve got everything from futuristic E-SUVs from Rivian and old-school body-on-frame dinosaurs like the Toyota Sequoia and the 4Runner. But as impressive as the super-SUV from Lamborghini, is it actually a real SUV?

What is the 2021 Lamborghini Urus?

It can be hard to figure out how to even talk about the concept of a Lamborghini SUV. Before any nerds push up their glasses and say, “well, actually Lamborghini made an SUV in the ‘80s…” Yes, the Italian bull got stamped on the LM002, but I think we can all agree that that thing hardly counts.

The Urus, however, is very Lamborghini, but it also seems to tick a lot of SUV boxes. The complexities are that although it is clearly the most practical and utilitarian Lamborghini (whatever that’s worth) yet it is clearly not as practical as many other SUVs. So, what are we left with?

How fast is the Lamborghini Urus?

Let’s go ahead and get down to brass tax here. The Urus’ main draw is that it is very much a supercar but is wearing an SUV suit. The 2021 model is fitted with a twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 641 horsepower.

As mentioned by Car and Driver’s review of the Urus, in a very Lambo fashion, the Urus idles with a menacing rumble but then screams like hell under power. Make no mistake; this is very much a supercar. All that power moves the SUV from 0-60 mph in only 3.1 seconds. That is barely slower than a Lamborghini Huracan. It also has a top speed of 190 mph.

Is the Urus a good SUV?

Like the Huracan, but more importantly, like many great SUVs, the Urus is AWD. The SUV and normal Lamborghini aspects mix in a way I would have never guessed. For instance, the interior is large, and there is actually decent cargo space, but the interior style is still very much designed in the typical Lambo/jet fighter cockpit style.

Unlike every other Lambo ever, The Urus has a real truck/cargo area, 22 cubic feet, to be exact. The interior is also littered with cubbies and various storage compartments that allow for storage of more than a spare set of leather driving gloves and spare sexy underwear, or whatever Lamborghini people typically keep in their cars.

Although the Urus doesn’t offer anything like a low-speed transfer case or any sort of crawling options, it is still a powerful 4×4, all things considered. Although it won’t keep up with a Jeep Wrangler or Defender on the boulders, the Urus does come with an optional Off-Road Package.

This 4×4 package has special driving modes for sand, snow, and dirt like normal, but it also sports some added bits. According to Lamborghini, the package includes reinforced stainless steel bumpers, brushed steel exhaust tips, and the possibility to raise the Super SUV even more to avoid the most ambitious obstacles. Ok, that isn’t exactly the toughest kit in the world, but it does come with some helpful tech. The TERRA and SABBIA modes help the super UV get after it in the dirt and sand with added vigor and brutality.

The verdict

Sure, the Lamborghini Urus isn’t the most practical SUV ever, but it has way more to offer than you could have ever convinced me. Lamborghini delivered on giving buyers both a full-blown Lambo and a full-blown SUV.

This is truly an impressive feat if you think about it. Granted, you’ll have to pay up if you want to own this impressive feat. The 2021 Lamborghini Urus starts at an eye-watering $222,000. But hey, it looks like a million bucks, so it’s a deal.
