The 2021 Nissan Rogue is far from the average, outdated SUV it was in its 2020 model year. It comes with plenty of new standard tech features and the interior looks more modern in general. Its engine also got a small power boost, which helps improves the Rogue’s driving demeanor.

However, the redesigned Nissan Rogue’s good reputation might be in danger. It fared well after its initial release in June, but now it’s under two recalls for potentially serious problems. According to Car Complaints, the latest one thankfully only affects a handful of units.

The 2021 Nissan Rogue’s assembly problems

Some Nissan Rogues are being recalled due to an incorrect assembly problem. The wheels were installed with the wrong wheel nuts, which don’t fit properly into the wheel. This causes the wheel to vibrate violently, breaking the wheel studs apart. If this goes on for too long, the wheel assembly will separate from the car itself.

According to CarScoops, this recall was a result of a programming error on the Rogue’s assembly line. The wheel nuts that its wheels received were actually meant for the Nissan Maxima, produced in the same factory. The turntable that dispenses these wheel nuts were not properly calibrated beforehand to differentiate between the two vehicles.

While it’s a minor factory error, it could cause an accident if the issue isn’t fixed. Cars.com lists the details of the Nissan Rogue’s other recall last February. The fuel tank lock ring was not completely sealed at the factory, an issue that could result in a fire. This recall affected 2,146 Nissan Rogue models.

How should owners fix this problem?

If you’ve noticed pronounced vibrations and increased tire wear on your Nissan Rogue, Nissan will inspect and replace the wheel nuts. Owners should call Nissan’s customer service number at 800-867-7669 or set up an appointment online. The recall number is PC799 and repairs are expected to begin May 7.

Nissan says that only 21 units were affected – cars that were built between September 21 and 22 of last year. If your Rogue’s wheel nuts are flat instead of conically-shaped, it’s probably one of the recalled models. It’s best to get it into the shop if you’re not sure since all inspections and repairs are free.

Is the 2021 Nissan Rogue still a good car?

The redesigned Nissan Rogue has gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. It’s powered by a 181-hp four-cylinder paired with a CVT, which provides smooth power right from the starting line. The CVT is predictably noisy, but it supplies timely and unobtrusive shifts during daily driving.

The base engine with FWD is rated for 27/35 mpg city/highway, great numbers for a compact SUV. Putting it in AWD only brings it down to 25/32 mpg city/highway for every trim beside the base S. 

Handling is also vastly improved compared to the outgoing Rogue. While it’s a far cry from sporty, Car and Driver testers felt more confident behind the wheel, especially while cornering. The new multi-link rear suspension also provides a more peaceful ride quality.

The Rogue’s updated interior is very upscale, with only a few cheap components to be found. Some interior features also have impressive detailing, like an unexpected textured finish on the window switches. The base Nissan Rogue can seat five riders on standard cloth upholstery. Higher trims have really nice options like quilted or genuine leather.

Cargo capacity shrank a little for this year, but 74 cubic feet of space total is still excellent. The 2021 Nissan Rogue also has an extensive collection of safety features, plus an updated infotainment interface.
