Ram’s New Diesel Truck Gets Better Fuel Economy Than a Toyota Camry
From hybrids to EVs, more and more automakers are shifting to greener vehicles. But when you picture a fuel-efficient vehicle, a pickup truck probably doesn’t spring to mind. A new Ram 1500 diesel trim is changing that.
The Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel can travel up to 1,000 miles on one tank of fuel, meaning this Ram truck has more impressive mileage than a Toyota Camry V6.
The Ram 1500 Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel’s incredible gas mileage
The Ram Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel gets 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Although most Toyota Camry trims offer significantly better fuel economy with a four-cylinder engine, the V6-powered models get about 22/31 mpg city/highway, meaning the new Ram truck edges ahead. Though it isn’t a sizable lead, a pickup truck this competitive is noteworthy.
The Ram’s incredible fuel efficiency largely stems from its aerodynamic design. In particular, alloy wheels lighten the vehicle’s weight, and running boards work to reduce drag and facilitate smooth airflow when the truck is in motion.
However, the Ram 1500 actually isn’t the most fuel-efficient truck. That honor goes to the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado. While the Ram has a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg, the Silverado sits just slightly ahead at 27 mpg. But Autotrader notes that these two vehicles’ fuel efficiency will likely perform almost the same for everyday driving.
The Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel’s specs and features
The 2021 Ram 1500 Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel packs a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 producing 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. This truck comes standard with automatic headlights, rear privacy glass, heated power mirrors, cruise control, and air-conditioning. A five-inch touchscreen is also standard.
This Ram 1500 has received the highest possible safety scores from the IIHS. Standard safety features include stability and trailer sway control, anti-lock disc brakes, and a backup camera. It’s worth noting that although rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring are optional on all other trims, they’re not available on the Tradesman.
What reviewers are saying about this Ram truck
Autotrader calls the Ram 1500 “confidence-inspiring,” praising it for the impressive amount of control it gives its drivers. With a five-link coil-spring rear suspension, the ride is fairly comfortable. This truck also offers an air suspension, making it easy to raise and lower the vehicle to clear obstacles or enter and exit the cab.
Reviewers particularly note the EcoDiesel option, thanks to its incredible fuel economy and torque. This trim also has impressive towing capabilities, with a maximum of 12,560 pounds.
Additionally, the cab offers comfortable spaciousness, and the Uconnect infotainment system is user-friendly and intuitive. But it’s also worth noting that the Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel is the most expensive engine in the Ram 1500 lineup. It costs about $43,935, and the exterior is available only in black or white. Other options, such as the 5.7-liter V8, are less fuel-efficient but more powerful and significantly more affordable.
Regardless, the Ram 1500 Tradesman HFE EcoDiesel’s incredible feel efficiency is absolutely worth noting. If you’re in the market for a greener pickup and this Ram truck fits in your budget, it should be on your radar.
