2021 couldn’t have come sooner. And this year brings exciting news: The Toyota GR Supra has already seen a remodel. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra provided an exciting sports coupe with a modern yet classic design. Now, less than a year later, the 2021 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 has arrived.

And last year’s buyers may have wished they’d waited. Here’s a look at the 2020 Toyota GR Supra and what the 2021 model brings to the table. 

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra: The good

MotorTrend reported early last year that the 2020 Toyota GR Supra was a bit famous on the road, likely thanks to its ancestor’s checkered past. But this luxury sports coupe draws attention with its gorgeous interior, exciting drivability, and user-friendly technology.

It packs a BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine harnessing over 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it performs well. Plus, MotorTrend’s test Supra got 27 mpg average, a whole 1 mpg better than the EPA estimate. When the 2020 model debuted, it started at $50,920, Car and Driver reported.

The base model also includes power memory seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless entry, and a push-button start.

Overall, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is a cool car at a reasonable price. 

2020 Toyota GR Supra: The bad

With the good comes the bad, or at least the no-so-great. According to MotorTrend, that includes the so-so rear suspension. Plus, the rebound damping isn’t gentle, making the 2020 GR Supra unsuitable for comfortable daily driving. Though it’s fast, these two issues make for a vehicle that could be difficult to handle.

And maybe this sounds like nitpicking, but the 2020 GR Supra’s dimmer switch is terrible, not changing the dashboard’s illumination in the slightest, MotorTrend adds.

That being said, does the 2021 model correct these mistakes?

Better in 2021

You probably want to know whether the new GR Supra is faster than last year’s. According to MotorTrend, that depends. Toyota gave the 2021 model an extra 47 hp and 3 lb-ft torque, which might disappoint consumers who purchased the 2020 GR Supra. This abrupt engine change to the engine is thanks to a new exhaust manifold with six ports instead of two, improving airflow and managing heat more effectively.

To answer your question: The 2021 model is faster than the 2020 — but not at first. When MT tested the two vehicles, the 2021 model beat its predecessor when given some time. It couldn’t reach 60 mph quite as fast, but it gained speed and finished the quarter-mile quicker.

“The 2021 beats the 2020 to the line by just 0.2 second, making the run in 12.3 seconds; but more impressively, it clears the traps over 5 mph faster, at 115.8 mph. Translated, this means the 2021 Supra 3.0’s extra power shows up at higher speeds, less so right off the line.”

And that’s not the only upgrade. 

The 2021 Toyota GR Supra fixes the 2020’s suspension problems. It does so by adding strut tower braces under the hood, revising the dampers’ rates, and replacing the bump stops. This makes a huge difference as far as steering ability, control, and overall drivability goes. It’s just that much more fun to drive. And you no longer have to be afraid of every bump and curve in the road, MotorTrend notes.

The 2021 Supra hasn’t been officially priced. The 2.0-liter model, also new for 2021, is expected to cost $40,000 to $45,000, and the 3.0-liter around $10,000 more.

Overall, both the last year’s and the 2021 Toyota GR Supra are rewarding sports cars. One happens to be a bit more enjoyable and a tad more powerful.
