How Far Can a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Go? Here Are the Official EPA Numbers
If you’re shopping for a brand-new electric crossover, chances are you’ll end up looking at the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. However, with stiff competition from Tesla, this electric Volkswagen will need to offer comparable performance if it wishes to succeed. Thankfully, it seems like this crossover is off to a good start, in terms of electric range at least.
That’s because the Environmental Protection Agency just completed its test of this all-new model. Aside from pure range figures, we get a complete breakdown by trim level. Surprisingly, the cheapest variant might be the one to get.
How much does the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 cost?
If you’re looking at getting a brand-new 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 in the U.S., you have just one option. Unlike other EV carmakers, Volkswagen opted to release its cheapest offering, the ID.4 Pro, before the higher trim levels. You’ll have to pay $39,995 if you want one of these crossovers on your driveway.
Previously, you could get a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 1st Edition for $43,995. As its name suggests, this variant exists mainly to celebrate the arrival of the model. As a result, it features a couple of tasteful aesthetic touches throughout. In terms of overall hardware, it’s basically the same as the Pro.
With this configuration, you’re getting a single electric motor mounted on the crossover’s rear axle. In total, this is good for 201 hp. However, if you want a more powerful variant, Volkswagen plans to offer an all-wheel-drive variant with 302 hp. Regardless of outright speed, most consumers want to know how far they’ll be able to travel on a single charge.
How far can this electric crossover go?
This is where the EPA’s testing of the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 comes in. According to Volkswagen, the ID.4 Pro managed to cover 260 miles on a single charge. The upcoming Pro S and 1st Edition trims both managed to cover 250 miles.
As a result, the cheapest variant offers the greatest amount of electric range. If we had to guess, this is likely because there is less equipment onboard sucking up electricity.
Since the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4’s range is an important component of its appeal, let’s see how its competitors stack up. The Tesla Model Y, for example, has a base range of 326 miles. It is worth pointing out that the Tesla is also $10,000 more expensive.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E, on the other hand, offers a base range of 230 miles. However, if you want to reach the ID.4’s range, you’ll need the extended battery for an additional $5,000. All in, a comparable Mach-E would also cost $10,000 more.
Will Volkswagen ID come to the U.S?
As its stands, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is the only ID model currently available in the U.S. The brand also produces the ID.3, a small electric hatchback, although it is exclusively sold in Europe. Expect the ID line to expand soon, covering a wide variety of electric SUV options. Regardless of what those might look like, the Family is off to a good start.
