2022 Acura MDX Type S Arrives as the Brand’s Most Powerful SUV Ever
If you’re looking for a quick SUV for daily use, the 2022 Acura MDX Type S wants to be your pick. As its name suggests, this is part of Acura’s sporty lineup of vehicles, joining the recently introduced TLX Type S. As a result, it won’t surprise you to learn that this high-riding model shares the same engine and output figures as its sedan counterpart.
In order to present this brand-new model to the world, Acura decided to debut it during this year’s Pikes Peak event by having it tow one of the competing vehicles. While this SUV looks great in photos, there is still plenty we don’t know about it.
How much power does the 2022 Acura MDX Type S have?
As far as SUVs for daily use go, the 2022 Acura MDX Type S might be one of the most fun out there. That’s because under its hood lies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 pushing out 355-hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. One of the most interesting aspects of this powertrain is that it was developed by the same engineers that put together the engine in the NSX.
As you might imagine, this SUV features an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring and a 10-speed automatic transmission. You also get large Brembo brakes up front and a double-wishbone suspension setup as well.
As mentioned earlier, there is still plenty of mystery surrounding this brand-new model, mainly its performance figures. Thankfully, we know that it has a max towing rating of 5,000 lb, more than enough to tow your race car around. While this SUV appears like it’ll be a great sporty SUV, it is only one of many more Type S models coming in the near future.
This is one of many more Type S models coming soon
Since the 2022 Acura MDX Type S shares components with the TLX sedan, it won’t surprise you to learn that the Japanese carmaker plans to build sporty versions of other models. Since we already have the MDX, that leaves us with the smaller RDX in the future. Based on this latest release, chances are this smaller variant will still get the same powertrain and hp figures.
Additionally, several rumors have indicated that even the NSX supercar might get a tuned-up Type S version. This would make sense when you consider that this supercar will be around at least up to the 2022 model year, says MotorTrend. Since it’s been out for a few years, a last hoorah before retirement could also make sense within the brand’s lineup.
Regardless of when they’ll arrive specifically, we know that more Type S models are certainly on the way.
How much does the 2022 Acura MDX Type S cost?
As mentioned in the intro, there are still several things we don’t know about the 2022 Acura MDX Types S. The main mystery surrounds how much it’ll cost when it arrives. For context, a base model starts at $47,925. As a result, don’t be surprised if the Type S model carries a significant premium.
For example, the base TLX starts at $37,500 while the Type S starts at $52,300. As a result, we could easily be looking at an SUV that costs over $60,000. However, we’ll have to wait for official pricing info.
