The BMW M5 is a midsize luxury sedan produced by BMW’s Motorsport (M) division. The most recent generation was released in 2018, but there’s an all-new M5 CS that arrived in 2022. The M5 is one of the most powerful, and one of the fastest, M Series cars in the lineup. Whether or not the BMW M5 is a supercar, it has been and continues to be a legendary sports sedan.

2022 BMW M5 price and trim-level options

How much is a 2022 BMW M5? This model will run you about $103,700 for the regular version, and around $142,000 for the M5 CS edition. Since BMW’s M cars are so specialized, you’ll rarely find different trim levels within the specific model.

If you’re looking for something a little less expensive, the BMW M550i xDrive sedan utilizes some aspects of BMW M Performance and is a surprising sleeper car. For an entry-level luxury sedan, the BMW 5-Series that the M5 is built on still packs plenty of power.

Interior design, quality, and features

The BMW M5 is a $100,000 luxury car, so it stands to reason that it’s a well-equipped car. BMW has always taken a slightly different approach to its interiors than some other luxury automakers, so the M5 may not have the same top-level premium feel as a Mercedes or a Cadillac, but the leather upholstery and soft-touch surfaces provide plenty of opulence.

The classic 2022 M5 can seat up to five people. The bucket seats found in both the front and rear of the 2022 M5 CS limit it to a four-person maximum.

2022 BMW M5 specs and performance features

Is the BMW M5 fast? Ask its 3.2-second 0-60 time. The M5 comes standard with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, making 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 M5 Competition makes 617 horsepower, and the BMW M5 CS is tuned to 627 horsepower.

The higher power means the 2022 M5 CS’s 0-60 time is even faster. According to BMW, it can accomplish this run in under 3 seconds. See BMW Blog break down the ride quality and handling that the CS model brings:

Does the 2022 BMW M5 get good fuel economy?

Unsurprisingly, BMW’s most powerful M Series car isn’t very efficient. Both the 600-horsepower M5 and the 627-horsepower M5 CS see about 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. That’s not the worst fuel economy you’ll see on a high-powered sedan, but frequent fill-ups of premium fuel will really start to add up.

Is the BMW M5 a reliable car?

The 2022 BMW M5 scored 80 out of 100 points on the J.D. Power Predicted Reliability survey. This is an average score. The M5 missed a “Great” rating for reliability by just one point. BMW isn’t really known for its reliability unless drivers are committed to taking care of these sensitive performance machines, but a score of 80 is respectable.

Safety and driver-assistance features

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2022 BMW M5 a full run of “Good” scores for safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t yet tested or scored the BMW 5 Series of the M5 specifically.

U.S. News provided a great breakdown of the safety features included in the new 2022 M5. This luxury sports car will offer lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive headlights with automatic high beams. Other driver-assistance features include a head-up display, surround-view parking camera system, self-parking functionality, and a forward-facing camera.

Used and pre-owned BMW M5 models to look for

If it’s not in the cards to buy a new six-figure sports car right now, it’s always possible to go hunting on auction sites, personal listings, and used-car lots to find a great used luxury car. Both the 2020 BMW M5 and the 2019 M5 are great options to buy used since they fall into the latest generation. They, and the 2018 BMW M5, benefit from any recent changes made.

The 2017 BMW M5 is a little older, but drivers will still be able to enjoy powerful performance and solid styling at more affordable used-car prices.

No matter what color, model year, or version of the M5 you might buy, you’re bringing home a handful.
